Job Summary Working under general supervision of the Department Director and specific supervision of the unit Clinical Manager, the technician is responsible for creating custom prosthetic and orthotic devices by fabricating constituent parts and assembling those parts into completed devices. The technician is also responsible for stocking and ordering fabrication inventory and maintaining lab cleanliness.

The fabrication of Orthotic and Prosthetic devices requires knowledge of and experience with plaster models, socket lamination, metal bending, joint alignment, foam shaping, thermoforming plastics and other materials, the mechanical principles related to orthotic and prosthetic use and the mechanical and technical craftsmanship to use laboratory tools safely and effectively. The Development Technician III must be able to work from oral or written instruction with minimal direct supervision, to fabricate prosthetic and orthotic components, and to perform high level assembly of those components into a final prosthesis or orthosis. It is expected that the Dev Tech III produces consistent products that are in keeping with quality standards set by the Clinical Manger. The Dev Tech III is expected to have excellent time management and planning skills needed to meet fabrication deadlines. Good verbal communication skills, basic computer knowledge: able to carry and push/pull over 60 pounds.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy. Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement. The salary range for this position is $36.11 - $44.95 (Hourly Rate). Required Qualifications

Excellent Technical aptitude. Demonstrated mechanical ability and hand eye coordination is required to use laboratory tools safely and effectively

Experience in fabrication of both Prosthetic and Orthotic devices

Applicant must have knowledge in the following: socket lamination, assembly of prosthetic componentry, foam shaping, plastic pulling/shaping/smoothing, plasterwork, static alignment, and ability to effectively use an industrial sewing machine

Prior experience as an orthotic/prosthetic technician working in a fast paced, multi-practitioner environment

Ability to work independently from oral instructions

Ability to read and interpret specification and dimensions

Excellent attention to detail

Ability to use precision measuring instruments

Strong interpersonal and verbal skills for communication with others

Ability to work individually and as a team player

Strong time management and planning skills; Ability to meet deadlines

Basic computing skills

Works on assignments that are semi-routine in nature but recognizes the need for occasional deviation from standard practice
