Position Overview The Machine Learning Engineer, with moderate guidance from more experienced engineers, works individually and in collaboration on multiple projects moderate to complex in scope. This role utilizes working knowledge of advanced AI and machine learning algorithms and models to solve problems involving biological, genomic, clinical, and healthcare data within advanced cancer screening and precision oncology. The engineer participates at every step of the solution development process – from ideation, design, implementation, to deployment – and contributes to the strategic vision for cutting‑edge AI methodologies at Exact Sciences. The position partners with biostatisticians, bioinformatics scientists, and data scientists to help eradicate cancer by preventing it, detecting it early, and guiding personalized treatment.
Essential Duties
Keep up with external and internal advances in AI technology.
Collaborate with ML/AI engineers and partners to articulate AI affordances.
Work with stakeholders to discover requirements for ML‑based solutions focused on bioinformatics, biostatistics, and data engineering.
Contribute to the design of software solutions utilizing state‑of‑the‑art AI and machine learning techniques.
Implement and deploy ML and AI solutions with software engineers.
Work in an Agile framework focused on rapid delivery of proof‑of‑concept solutions.
Advance AI strategy at Exact Sciences, leveraging existing tools and in‑house development.
Build training resources, develop knowledge bases, and educate on advanced AI/ML technologies.
Select methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria with judgment within defined policies.
Communicate complex concepts to peers.
Demonstrate accountability, innovation, integrity, quality, and teamwork.
Support Quality Management System policies and procedures.
Maintain reliable attendance.
Act with an inclusion mindset and model inclusive behaviors.
Work the designated schedule.
Operate mobile device, tablet, or computer for ~85% of workday.
Travel up to 5% of working time, including overnight/weekend travel.
Minimum Qualifications
Ph.D. in Statistics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, or related quantitative field OR master’s degree plus 4 years experience.
Demonstrated knowledge of advanced AI concepts (neural networks, deep learning, reinforcement learning).
Knowledge of AI/ML techniques in NLP, image processing, computer vision, or pattern recognition.
Knowledge of large language models for generative AI (transformer architecture, retrieval‑augmented generation).
Programming experience in Python and a machine learning framework (TensorFlow, PyTorch, or SKLearn).
Familiarity with open‑source AI models.
Ability to perform essential duties with or without accommodation.
Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.
Preferred Qualifications
1+ year life sciences industry experience with biological data.
1+ year experience in molecular diagnostics, preferably cancer diagnostics.
Expertise in data mining within healthcare to generate insight from routine data.
Basic knowledge of ML‑Ops and model deployment processes.
Scientific understanding of cancer biology.
Salary Range $112,700.00 – $192,050.00 (national range; may vary by location). The position is bonus eligible.
