Clinical Research Nurse Thoracic Oncology
The Research Nurse collaborates with physicians to implement and evaluate clinical research in the thoracic oncology program. The role requires expert knowledge of cancer pathophysiology, treatment modalities, and the clinical research process. The RN utilizes evidence‑based nursing practice to develop and coordinate care plans that address the physical, psychological, and social needs of patients and families enrolled in clinical trials. Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills are essential, as is a commitment to ongoing learning and staying current with the literature.
Responsibilities Administrative
Assists the principal investigator with protocol development, review, and budget planning.
Collaborates with the Dana‑Farber Harvard Cancer Center quality assurance office to develop protocol materials.
Serves as research coordinator for National Cancer Institute, pharmaceutical‑sponsored, and National Cooperative Group protocols.
Research
Assists with recruitment and registration of patients to clinical trials.
Coordinates scheduling of laboratory, radiographic assessments, admissions, and clinic visits.
Monitors test results and coordinates protocol data management.
Collaborates with institute and external staff to complete clinical research trials.
Clinical
Coordinates study enrollment, treatment, and completion of study requirements.
Works collaboratively as an effective member of the healthcare team.
Collaborates with Care Coordination for all patient care referrals.
Collaborates with the primary nurse to ensure patient care needs are met.
Provides protocol education to patients and families, tailoring communication to age‑specific needs.
Collects and prepares required specimens for analysis; monitors test results.
Documents in charts and communicates observations to investigators and physicians.
Provides protocol in‑service training and serves as a resource to the care team.
Monitors the environment of care for safety and regulatory compliance.
Maintains evidence‑based practice consistent with nursing policies and professional standards.
Participates in QA/QI projects for the clinical program and Division of Nursing.
Adheres to the ANA Code of Ethics in all professional practice.
Fosters an inclusive environment sensitive to diverse populations.
Administers medications as necessary.
Maintains BLS certification.
Professional Development
Identifies areas for professional growth and formulates goals and methods for achievement.
Pursues active membership in local and national professional organizations.
Supports research activities within the Division of Nursing.
Participates in Division of Nursing / Institute committees.
Meets all annual evaluation requirements and competencies.
Collaborates on professional reports, articles, and presentations.
Licensed as a registered nurse in Massachusetts or New Hampshire as required.
Baccalaureate degree in nursing preferred; associate degree requires completion of BSN within four years.
Minimum of one year of recent RN experience.
Ambulatory and/or oncology experience preferred.
Professional nursing certification preferred (OCN, BMTCN, CPHON, AOCNP, CRNI, RN‑BC).
AHA BLS required; AHA ACLS accepted as minimum.
Pay Transparency Statement The hiring range is based on market pay structures and is determined by factors such as business needs, market conditions, and internal equity, in addition to the candidate’s relevant experience, skills, and qualifications. For union positions, the pay range is determined by the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). Nurse Steps 1‑21 rates: $42.65 – $105.81 per hour.
