What’s this role? Our Foundation Engineering teams are responsible for innovating and scaling our systems and infrastructure to align with Etsy's rapid growth and future plans. More specifically, our teams build, maintain, and support many of the platforms and services that power Etsy’s technical stack to connect tens of millions of Etsy sellers and customers. We also partner with Etsy engineers to help them achieve smooth development and deployment experiences.

This is a full‑time position reporting to the Senior Engineering Manager, Service Platform. In addition to salary, you will also be eligible for an equity package, an annual performance bonus, and our competitive benefits that support you and your family as part of your total rewards package at Etsy. For this role, we are considering candidates based in the United States. Candidates living within commutable distance of Etsy’s Brooklyn Office Hub or in the San Francisco Bay Area may be the first to be considered. For candidates within commutable distance, Etsy requires in‑office attendance once or twice per week depending on your proximity to the office. Team and Environment You will be joining a mission‑critical team responsible for the architecture, implementation, and support of Etsy’s primary container‑based Services Platform built on Cloud Run. This new platform supports the service‑based architecture initiatives of many Etsy teams, including both product and infrastructure engineering. We’re looking for people who are excellent at working with others, are creative problem‑solvers, and are passionate about software as craft. Day‑to‑Day Responsibilities

Serve as the technical and career role model on the direct team, in the Platform Initiative, and within the entire infrastructure organization.

Architect systems in GCP and lead delivery of multiple critical and complex technical initiatives in GCP.

Work with stakeholders and internal customers to align their requirements with project roadmaps and technical design.

Evaluate pros and cons and provide guidance and recommendations on design decisions or technical direction.

Determine project priorities and quarterly deliverables, and help drive the team and initiative roadmaps.

Produce stellar technical specs and documentation that can be read and understood by team members, other technical leads, and engineering leaders.

Mentor and coach junior engineers on the team and in the engineering organization.

Participate in hiring efforts.

Assume additional tasks as required; duties may evolve over time at Etsy’s discretion or in accordance with local law.

Desired Qualities and Experience

7+ years of experience in an SRE or DevOps role in a cloud environment with strong software and/or platform engineering experience.

Experience as a technical lead or architect for large‑scale, distributed, consumer‑facing applications.

Proficiency in Bash, Python, or Go is essential; PHP or Node is a bonus.

In‑depth knowledge of Linux operating systems and experience with hypervisors, Linux containers, and orchestration managers.

Design experience with Service‑Oriented Architecture and hands‑on experience with container management tooling (e.g., Cloud Run or Kubernetes).

Comfortable providing estimates or project ideas that influence the team’s roadmap.

Strong collaborator and communicator; ability to mentor other engineers.

Concise and clear written communication.

Ability to step up to lead the team when necessary or dive deep to help with challenging technical details.
