WIC Program Assistant
Position Summary As a member of the WIC team, you will work with the Nutritionist, Nutrition Aide, and Director of Nutrition Services to ensure timely client flow and processing.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities
Greet all clients/visitors entering the WIC office with a courteous professional attitude.
Answer phone calls and handle requests for general information, rescheduling appointments, lost eWIC cards, etc., as assigned by the Director of Nutrition Services.
Explain WIC services, benefits, and policies to clients.
Assist in the certification of WIC applicants by interviewing, obtaining basic demographic data, verifying identity, residency, and income eligibility, and entering all data into CT-WIC.
Assign eWIC cards and replace them according to State guidelines.
Adhere to Federal and State guidelines when determining an applicant’s eligibility.
Perform calls to participants as needed.
Schedule participants for nutrition education, initial certification, subsequent and food package changes.
Issue WIC benefits and distribute necessary paperwork.
Provide ID card, vendor list, and WIC food list to participants.
Assist participants with forms and completion of forms.
Maintain participant confidentiality and accurate documentation.
Promote breastfeeding support as appropriate.
Record hours worked on quarterly time study form.
Assist in preparation of materials, visual aids, and activities in conjunction with other local agency staff.
Attend all training and continuing education sessions offered by the WIC Program and State WIC office.
Screen potential participants and manage appointment scheduling in CT-WIC.
Direct participants to appropriate staff and manage flow in the reception area.
Keep a supply of referrals and program pamphlets for participants.
Monitors reports assigned by the Director.
Assist in outreach activities and verify WIC eligibility in accordance with Federal and State regulations.
Make required referrals to Medicaid, SNAP, and other services as needed.
Explain food and vendor lists to participants and issue WIC food package in compliance with regulations.
Maintain thoroughness, accuracy, and efficiency in record keeping, scheduling, and follow-up.
Respond to quality assurance feedback from supervisor.
Perform other job-related duties as necessary or assigned by the Director.

Job Qualifications/Requirements Education

Experience
: At least two years of experience working in a medical office or at least one year of experience working in a WIC setting. Health care or community facility experience preferred.
Language Skills
: Ability to communicate clearly in English and another language when appropriate.
Licensure / Certification
: None required.
Mathematical Skills
: Basic arithmetic.
Reasoning Ability
: Ability to deescalate/reason when dealing with irate participants.
