Overview
Cook County Health will seek to fill the positions by means of the Hiring Fair Process. Onsite interviews will be held at 1950 West Polk Street - 5th Floor, Chicago, IL 60612. The only opportunity to interview for this position will be on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. You must attend onsite at the Hiring Fair (and sit for an interview if qualified) to be considered for the position. This position is covered by the collective bargaining agreement between Cook County and the National Nurses Organizing Committee (NNOC). Job Summary
UNION - NNOC Provides professional nursing care to all patients/detainees of various ages utilizing the nursing process of assessment, planning, intervention and evaluation. Interacts with patients/detainees, correctional officers, peers, department heads, physicians and a multi-disciplinary health team. Maintains standards of professional nursing. Demonstrates leadership by directing, supervising and coordinating the activity of ambulatory and infirmary personnel, including the Licensed Practical Nurse and other nursing support staff assigned to the area. Offers constructive suggestions for improvement of patient care, clinical management, interdepartmental relationships and health education of patients/detainees. Demonstrates flexibility and participates in environmental change. Leads quality improvement and fiscal accountability initiatives.
Typical Duties
Applies and documents all elements of the nursing process through assessment, planning, implementing, and evaluating the delivery of care for patients of all ages (evaluates patient outcomes). Utilizes a multi-disciplinary approach to ensure the highest quality patient care. Uses critical thinking and clinical judgment throughout the decision-making process. Delegates specific tasks to other caregivers (LPN, other support staff) and assumes responsibility for all patient care. Works with patients, families, and other healthcare workers as necessary to assist patients to their attainable level of wellness. Fosters illness prevention through assessment of detainee Health Request Forms, assessment and triage of patients and-focused patient education. Participates in division/unit meetings, unity/divisional decision making, cost containment and quality improvement activities. Supports the Department of Patient Care Services Policies/Procedures and Standards. Supports divisional/unit standards of practice and the Institutional Policies and Procedures. Assumes responsibility for accountability, attendance and minimizing tardiness. Maintains a minimum of 12 hours of in-service education annually. Maintains current knowledge of Correctional Standards. Knowledge of infection control, safety, fire, disasters and mandatory programs; ensures compliance and attendance at educational training. Maintains current professional licensure, CPR, and other professional certifications. Contributes to the orientation of new personnel. Administers medications according to policies and practice standards; uses pharmacology knowledge, pathophysiology, mathematics and therapeutic dosage understanding. Ensures medication passage to all assigned detainees and documents refusals or omissions. Assumes responsibility for patient rounds on units and tiers; assesses needs for health care services. Assesses need for emergency care and initiates appropriate action. Demonstrates the ability to properly use emergency equipment. Facilitates patient transport to the emergency room as appropriate. Provides supervision and support to Licensed Practical Nurses and other staff. Collaborates with physicians, emergency medical technicians, paramedics and all health care team members. Fosters collaborative relationships with correctional staff. Promotes positive customer relations with patients, visitors, physicians, correctional staff, and other health care team members. Participates on committees as requested. Ensures documentation is consistent with policies. Maintains safety for self and others in the correctional environment; upholds ethics and confidentiality. Presents a professional appearance and communication style. Supports professional growth through goal setting and annual progress tracking. Engages in process management to meet regulatory standards (National Commission on Correctional Healthcare, JCAHO, OSHA, HIPAA, Corporate Compliance). Functions as a unit resource person and coordinates staffing and priorities; communicates unit activities to the Nurse Coordinator. Assists in staffing for oncoming shifts and provides reports to the charge nurse/manager. Uses critical thinking, judgment, management principles and leadership skills. Provides direct patient care and conducts rounds to evaluate patient needs and census. Implements physician orders and nursing directives for patient care. Maintains patient care documentation and participates in team conferences and ongoing training. Maintains inventory of medical supplies/equipment and prepares requisitions. Assists providers with medical tasks and emergencies as needed. Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Must be licensed as a Registered Professional Nurse in the State of Illinois OR have the ability to obtain licensure two weeks prior to starting employment (required). Current CPR card is required.
Preferred Qualifications
One year of recent clinical experience in acute care or an ambulatory facility is preferred. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification is preferred. Drug/alcohol dependency or case management experience is preferred. A Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing is preferred.
