Head of Trading
Location New York, New York (On-Site/Hybrid)
About the Role Restoration Climate is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Head of Trading to lead our environmental commodities trading desk. This critical senior hire will lead the initial buildout and ongoing strategy of our trading desk, overseeing trade origination, structuring, and execution. The ideal candidate demonstrates a strong track record of performance in trading voluntary carbon, allowances, and other environmental commodities, and will bring deep relationships across corporate buyers, brokers, investors, and intermediaries.
The Head of Trading is a senior management-level role intended for a mid/late-career professional with the ability to build and lead a team, drive environmental commodities deals from inception through close, and help shape the company’s top-level commercial strategy. Restoration Climate is an early-stage but quickly growing climate finance startup, so the Head of Trading will manage trade execution and systems design for the buildout of the desk. Given the hands‑on nature of this role, the Head of Trading will be required to work from Restoration’s Midtown NYC office at least 3 days per week.
Key Responsibilities
Establish trading desk infrastructure, partnerships, software stack, processes, budget, VAR, and best practices
Design and implement Restoration’s trading framework, including systems, risk controls, and reporting
Create and execute environmental commodities trading strategies based on market fundamentals, proprietary analytics, and disciplined risk management; target markets include voluntary and compliance carbon offsets, allowances, RECs, and other environmental commodities
Identify and structure unique opportunities in the voluntary and compliance carbon markets, executed both OTC and on exchanges
Manage and grow a portfolio of key client relationships, including corporate buyers, project developers, trading firms, investors, and intermediaries
Drive business development and market expansion in North America and globally
Collaborate with commercial, operations, origination, and executive teams to align trading strategy with broader business objectives
Build and lead a small team as the trading desk scales
Monitor relevant market trends, pricing dynamics, and regulatory developments
Represent the company at key industry events and conferences
Requirements and Preferred Qualifications
Minimum 5+ years of experience in environmental commodities trading, ideally with exposure to both voluntary and compliance markets
Familiarity with project-based carbon credit markets, CORSIA, Article 6, and other compliance and voluntary carbon markets
Deep relationships with corporate buyers, environmental commodities traders, brokers, and environmental project developers
Demonstrated ability to generate and close trades, with a proven book of business
Combination of strong commercial instincts and technical trading expertise
Experience in entrepreneurial or emerging trading environments, ideally building and leading a trading desk
Excellent negotiation, communication, and interpersonal skills
Entrepreneurial mindset and comfort operating in a fast‑paced, dynamic environment
Bachelor’s degree in finance, economics, environmental science, or related field.
Must be based in or near New York City
Compensation Competitive base salary, performance-based bonus tied to desk profitability and growth, and equity participation potential
