Overview
The Massachusetts Veterans Home (MVH) at Chelsea is seeking an Assistant Director of Nursing to join their team. The Assistant Director of Nursing develops, implements, and coordinates nursing services for Veterans within the facility. This role provides supervision to Veteran Care Coordinators and Off-Shift Nursing Supervisors, evaluates the effectiveness of nursing services, implements quality assurance programs, maintains standards of care and ensures compliance with federal, state and professional standards and regulations, coordinates and provides in-service programs for nursing personnel. In the absence of the Director of Nursing, exercises full supervision over all personnel assigned to the Nursing Administration. Responsibilities
Assess and evaluate nursing care provided in the Home under the management of the Veteran Care Coordinators (RN IVs). Coordinate the clinical and administrative activities of all nursing staff within the Home, across three shifts, and ensure continuity and quality of Veteran care. Interview candidates for employment as nurses. Recommend new equipment purchases and assist in developing and implementing the Department’s annual budget. Initiate and/or coordinate special projects to maintain and upgrade the quality of Veteran care. Inspect physical facilities in conjunction with the Director of Facilities and Maintenance to ensure compliance with Federal and State laws and regulations. Analyze statistical reports (e.g., Veteran census, personnel changes, accidents, time and attendance) to recommend action regarding census, deployment of personnel, and efficient use of resources. Provide direct and indirect supervision for nursing services personnel. Coordinate, develop, and provide in-service education programs. Coordinate, conduct, and participate in meetings, in-service, and continuing educational activities. Complete employee performance appraisals (EPRS) on direct reporting staff. In the absence of the Director of Nursing, exercise full supervision over all personnel assigned to the Nursing Administration. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications
Knowledge of methods used in evaluating nursing practice. Knowledge of the principals and practices of health care administration. Ability to conduct interviews. Ability to plan and conduct training in nursing. Ability to prepare statistical reports. Ability to communicate both written and orally in a precise, understandable manner. Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with others. Knowledge of the principles and practices of supervision, including planning and assigning work, resource management, training needs assessment, and disciplinary actions. Ability to establish rapport and deal tactfully with persons from varied ethnic, cultural and/or economic backgrounds. Knowledge of regulatory agencies involved in the long-term care arena (e.g., JCAHO, VA, DPH, OSHA). Current and valid professional nurse registration with the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing. Recent graduates from an approved nursing school must have applied for the first available RN examination. Applicants must have at least (A) four years of full-time or equivalent part-time experience as a registered nurse in a recognized hospital, clinic, or medical facility and (B) at least two years in a supervisory, administrative, or managerial capacity, or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and substitutions below. Substitutions: 1. A graduate degree with a major in nursing may substitute for a maximum of one year of the required (A) experience.* No substitutions will be allowed for the required (B) experience. *Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL LEVELS IN SERIES: Current and valid registration as a professional nurse under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.* *Recent graduates from an approved school of nursing must have applied for the first available registered nurse examination.
