Technical Theatre Specialist (Temporary Pool)

Salary: $50.00 Hourly
Job Type: Temporary (maximum of 165 working days within a fiscal year)
Ideal Candidate Statement This position requires skilled technical support for the Theatre & Dance department: constructing stage sets, props, and special effects; operating and maintaining sound, lighting, and projection equipment; and assisting with cost estimates, inventory management, and safety compliance. The technician will support all aspects of theater production and instruction, ensuring smooth operation of scene shops, stages, and technical equipment.
Duties and Responsibilities
Construct, erect, and paint stage scenery, backdrops, flats, and props.
Operate, maintain, and repair sound, lighting, projection, rigging, and painting equipment.
Monitor and train students in the safe use of tools and technical equipment.
Assist in estimating production costs, time requirements, and technical needs for sets, lighting, and scenery.
Maintain inventory records and generate supply and equipment orders; issue materials and tools to students.
Ensure proper maintenance, cleanliness, and safety of scene shops, stages, equipment storage, and audience areas.
Support rehearsals and performances by directing stage crews and planning work schedules as assigned.
Perform related duties as assigned to support the Theatre & Dance department’s educational and production mission.
Adhere to established professional theatre protocols and production deadlines to ensure all technical and design elements are completed on schedule.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge:
Technical direction, stage and prop design & construction, lighting, projections, sound, rigging, scenic painting, and special effects.
Principles and safe methods of stage and prop management, including power and hand tools.
Color harmony and set‑building materials.
Stage set design, floor plans, elevations, and construction techniques.
Operation and maintenance of contemporary sound consoles, lighting consoles, projection equipment, speakers, amplifiers, and digital audio systems.
Applicable fire regulations, safety codes, and health standards for theater environments.
Acoustics and sound control principles.
Inventory management practices.
Computer systems, software, and hardware used in theater technical operations.
Skills:
Assist with sound mixing and sound design for theater productions, including operation of digital and analog sound consoles, microphone setup, audio editing, and speaker placement.
Contribute to set design processes by collaborating with department leads, drafting plans, and assisting with model building or digital rendering.
Support projection design tasks including operation and programming of projection equipment, media server management, and integration of multimedia elements into performances.
Engage in other technical design areas as directed by department faculty as needed.
Work creatively and collaboratively with directors, designers, and instructors to enhance production values and educational experiences.
These responsibilities are encouraged when the staff technician has demonstrated technical skills and the department's production needs require such expertise.
Abilities:
Construct, erect, place, and paint stage scenery and props according to blueprints and lighting plots.
Organize scene shop activities and coordinate construction projects.
Rig and focus lighting equipment; program lighting consoles effectively.
Create digital audio designs and operate projection equipment.
Use and maintain common technical theater tools and equipment.
Maintain detailed and accurate inventory and maintenance records.
Provide clear, concise instructions and training to students and staff.
Collaborate efficiently with instructors, staff, students, and external authorities regarding compliance and safety.
Learn and apply general and specialized software applications relevant to the work.
Keep updated with emerging technologies and techniques relevant to theater production design.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent AND two or more years of technical training AND two or more years of industry experience.
Must demonstrate responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse backgrounds of community college students, including socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic factors.
