Entry Level Civil Engineer - Aviation
to be based in
Hunt Valley / Baltimore, MD .
This position is open to Spring and Winter 2026 graduates and will begin as soon as available in our Transportation Aviation Business Line.
Unlike traditional civil engineering roles, this position focuses on airports—designing and improving runways, taxiways, aprons, and terminals. You’ll collaborate with senior engineers (ranging from 1 to 40 years of experience), gain mentorship, and work on major projects at some of the largest airports in the Mid-Atlantic region. This role offers structured career growth, exposure to fast‑paced aviation projects, and a clear path toward PE licensure.
The position involves planning, design, engineering, and construction for airport projects dealing with airfield safety, standards, improvement, and expansion programs. Design work includes airfield planning, layout, and site design, earthwork analyses and design, hydrologic and hydraulic analyses and design, pavement design and maintenance, construction safety and phasing, aircraft layouts and modeling, storm water management design, erosion and sediment control design, utility coordination and design, environmental permitting, and preparation of construction plans, specifications, schedules, design reports, and cost estimates. Construction work includes construction administration and management including shop drawing review, responding to contractor questions, and construction inspection. The Aviation Engineering Group interacts with and is supported by many other in‑house disciplines including Planners, Architects, Mechanical, Electrical, Structural, Civil, Environmental, Geotechnical and Special Systems Engineers in typical projects supporting our airport clients.
Responsibilities
Completes designs, calculations, sketches, diagrams, schematics, and final working drawings for preparation of construction plans related to airport development projects including runways, taxiways, aprons, hangars, terminals, and other airport facilities.
Prepares construction specifications for airport development projects per FAA Advisory Circular 150/5370-10 and State requirements.
Prepares design reports, schedules, quantity takeoffs, and cost estimates.
Collects and analyzes data to support design and construction phases of projects.
Uses various computer software for design development and prepares plans in Civil 3D.
Coordinates and collaborates with other airport/civil engineering, architectural, and engineering disciplines, sub-consultants, Utility companies, permitting agencies, contractors, government and regulatory agencies, and clients.
Performs construction administration and construction inspection.
Performs work in accordance with agreed‑upon budget and schedule.
