Position Summary The term Graduate Assistant is the umbrella term that encompasses all types of GA appointments. Graduate Assistants are employed by the University to teach, conduct research, or assist with administrative duties in departments and non-academic units. Every attempt is made to assign Graduate Assistants to positions that are directly related to the student’s field of study or that provide the opportunity to develop transferable, professional skills. Graduate Assistantships are assigned in the department or unit and confirmed by the Graduate School.
Department/Office Mission The Office of Leadership and Civic Engagement prepares students to serve as changemakers. We develop, promote, and advance civic engagement, leadership development, and meaningful service to create positive social change.
Reporting This position falls under the direct supervision of the Assistant Director for Civic Engagement.
Responsibilities
Co-coordinate with the Assistant Director on signature event community service programming, including the Volunteer Fair and the Empty Bowls program.
Recruit, select, and advise student and/or staff planning teams and participants for community dialogue programs.
Assist with initiatives geared towards increasing civic and democratic engagement, including voting among students, staff, and faculty.
Coordinate the weekly OLCE newsletter and expand other communication tools and educational resources to campus and community constituents.
Serve on the facilitation team for the Bronze Experience of the Spartan Leadership Challenge.
Support ongoing assessment (reports, data analysis, etc.) and accountability for program outcomes.
Participate in OLCE office‑wide programming, including the SECU Internship, Changemaker Week planning committee, Changemaker of the Month program, Spartan Leadership Challenge Medallion Ceremony, and Days of Service.
Provide support to OLCE’s operations and programs as necessary, as well as other duties as assigned.
Work Hours and Environment This position is co‑located in an OLCE office space with other OLCE GAs. Each GA has its own desk area. Work is mainly completed in the office, though some programming takes place in different areas around campus. This position is expected to work an average of 20 hours per week during the traditional fall and spring semesters.
Additional Terms of Employment Start date is in the first week of August. This position is traditionally hired as a 2‑year Graduate Assistantship.
Minimum Qualifications
Maintain academic good standing at all times (3.0 GPA).
Be enrolled full‑time, which is generally a minimum of 9 credits.
Make satisfactory progress toward your degree as defined by your academic program and the Graduate School.
Meet the requirements to be eligible for employment in the U.S.
Required Skills or Prerequisites
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Experience or skill with facilitating workshops.
Ability to take initiative while working both autonomously and with a team.
Excellent organizational and event planning skills.
Interest and passion for working to empower college students to recognize themselves as civically responsible leaders.
