Amazon LEO is an initiative to increase global broadband access through a constellation of 3,236 satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO). Product Design (PD) strives to constantly raise the bar on the customer experience. Product Design Engineers engage with an experienced cross‑disciplinary team to conceive, design and bring to market innovative consumer products for the Amazon Leo program. Key responsibilities include mechanical part and assembly design, testing, evaluating, and down selection. These positions identify key design attributes, work quickly and efficiently to converge on an electromechanical design for the system, highlight concerning issues to leadership and provide recommendations on how to revolve them. The output of their work is the physical product. They know intimately the rationale and tradeoffs behind each and every detail of the design from material selection, reinforcing rib, molding gate, etc. They work with manufacturing partners early to scale their designs for high volume manufacturing while optimizing for cost, performance, and challenging schedules. They have the ability to communicate effectively and efficiently with PD team members, cross‑functional teams, and executives.

Key job responsibilities

  • PD Direct Responsible Individual (DRI) for multiple system components (housings, PCBs, thermal components, etc).
  • Work with cross‑functional team to solve difficult electromechanical problems to enable the design.
  • Identify key design constraints and priorities.
  • Demonstrate solid mechanical fundamentals and judgment through design decisions.
  • Deliver robust, flexible, durable, and performant designs.
  • Concise and accurate communication with PD members, cross‑functional teams, and executives.
  • Customer focused when solving ambiguous problems.
  • Ability to create scalable solutions while solving tactical problems.

Export Control Requirement

Due to applicable export control laws and regulations, candidates must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (i.e., current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent.
  • 3+ years of experience product design (consumer, medical, telecom, etc).
  • 3+ years of experience with 3D CAD modeling & 2D drawing creation.
  • Experience with designing for high volume manufacturing and assembly processes (plastic injection / thermoforming, casting, sheet metal, machining, various finishing processes).
  • Experience performing tolerance analysis and statistical analysis techniques.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent.
  • 5+ years of experience in consumer electronics products designing IP66 outdoor‑rated electronics/telecommunications products.
  • Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs), flexes and electrical interconnect design experience.
  • Experience performing mechanical and thermal Finite Element Analysis (FEA) simulations.
  • Subject Matter Expert in several mechanical engineering disciplines.
  • Experience with Phase Array antennas including products used in the field.
  • Excellent mechanics and material fundamentals.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills at both the engineering and executive level.

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several U.S. geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $105,600/year in our lowest geographic market up to $185,000/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job‑related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
