Summary Travis Credit Union’s Mortgage Underwriter job family evaluates and approves mortgage loan applications to ensure compliance with investor, regulatory, and internal guidelines. The role mitigates risk, ensures loan quality, and supports the credit union’s lending objectives through sound underwriting practices.
Responsibilities
Underwrites conventional 1st and 2nd mortgage loans, verifying completeness, accuracy, and compliance.
Maintains up‑to‑date knowledge of multiple loan product guidelines, desktop underwriter/loan prospector (DU/LP) guidelines, and risk assessment tools.
Reviews borrower profiles, including income documentation, tax returns, credit reports, preliminary reports, judgments, bankruptcy documents, and appraisals.
Maintains service‑level standard of decisions within a 48‑hour timeframe.
Primary underwriter for first and second mortgages, ensuring loans meet investor, regulatory, and TCU guidelines.
Maintains awareness of investor guideline updates, changing economic conditions, and new trends in the insured‑mortgage markets, loan products, procedures, and relevant software programs.
Reworks loans to new terms and adds conditions as needed to ensure viable credit decisions.
Analyzes and calculates income documentation such as personal and business income statements and ensures documentation supports final loan decisions.
Exercises judgment, conducts reasonableness tests, and issues quality decisions.
Determines file accuracy and completeness, ensuring consistent processes.
Maintains knowledge of secondary market activity and industry practices affecting underwriting quality.
Communicates collaboratively with sales team, processors, and management.
Assists in preparation of audit/repurchase responses and/or rebuttal reviews.
Skills
Appraisal review and tax return analysis experience.
PC skills: word‑processing, spreadsheets, email.
Solid understanding of TRID‑RESPA and regulatory requirements.
Strong analytical, decision‑making, and problem‑solving skills.
High accuracy and attention to detail.
Ability to prioritize and handle a high‑volume workload.
Professional written and verbal communication skills.
Proficient with computers, including LOS systems, DU/LP, Microsoft Office, and Excel.
Ability to adapt/learn/utilize multiple software programs. Experience with paperless environments preferred.
Ability to complete tasks within strict timeframes, self‑direct, use independent judgment while accepting acceptable risk, and multi‑task proficiently.
Self‑starter, adaptable to changing environments, and able to communicate and work well with partners and co‑workers.
Sound understanding of credit union products and services.
Ability to work independently and motivated to achieve goals with minimal supervision.

Requirements

High School Diploma and a minimum of 3 years related experience; or Bachelor’s degree and 1 year related experience; or equivalent related work experience.
FHA/VA Certification, preferred.
Senior Mortgage Underwriter
Reports directly to assigned department leadership.
High School Diploma and a minimum of 5 years related experience; or a Bachelor’s degree and 3 years related experience; or equivalent related work experience.
FHA/VA Certification, preferred.
Compensation Base salary starting range is commensurate with experience.
