Lead Dental Assistant – Role Overview

Mission: Increase the efficiency of the dentist and the team in the delivery of quality oral health care.

Clinical Support

  • Prepares operatory for the guests and is an integral part of the guest experience flow.
  • Prepares guests for dental treatment by welcoming, comforting, and seating.
  • Provides instrumentation by sterilizing and delivering instruments to the treatment area; positioning instruments for dentists’ access; suctioning; passing instruments.
  • Provides materials by selecting, mixing, and placing materials on instruments and in the guest’s mouth.
  • Provides diagnostic information by exposing and developing radiographic studies; pouring, trimming, and polishing study casts.
  • Maintains guest appearance and ability to masticate by fabricating temporary restorations; cleaning and polishing removable appliances.
  • Helps dentists manage dental and medical emergencies by maintaining CPR certification, emergency drug and oxygen supply, and emergency telephone directory.
  • Documents dental care services by charting in guest records.
  • “Traffic control” of patient flow and assists doctors in guiding patients to ensure proper flow in the studio.
  • Ensures that all lab cases are ready and pulled for the following day’s schedule.
  • Assists in the efficient transition of new doctors and/or dental assistants to ensure better acclimation to the office.
  • Ensures proper dental assistant coverage on specialist days and to cover vacations or sick days.

Teamwork

  • Ensures that the back office runs smoothly.
  • Patient hand-offs should be professional and ultimately create an excellent guest experience.
  • The Lead Dental Assistant should lead by example and build efficiency in regular patient flow.
  • Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.

Supply Ordering

  • Ensures operation of dental equipment by completing preventive maintenance, following manufacturer instructions, troubleshooting malfunctions, calling for repairs, maintaining inventories, and evaluating new equipment and techniques.
  • Responsible for the maintenance of emergency kits and first aid supplies to ensure they are stocked properly and up‑to‑date.
  • Follows maintenance schedules for the autoclave on a weekly/monthly basis and schedules coverage accordingly.
  • Identifies, reports, and follows up on maintenance issues in the office.

Compliance

  • Ensures clinical staff follows OSHA regulations and safety requirements and complies with HIPAA guidelines.
  • Maintains a safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations.
  • Protects guests and team members by adhering to infection‑control policies and protocols.
  • Conserves dental resources by using equipment and supplies wisely.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge through workshops, publications, networking, and professional societies.

Requirements

  • Must meet state requirements of a Dental Assistant for the market in which you are located.
  • 1–3 years experience in a larger group practice (preferred).
  • Excellent communication skills, written and verbal.
  • Engaging personality with high EQ and ability to learn new ideas/concepts quickly.

Pay Range: $30 USD – $34 USD
