Summary The phlebotomist is responsible for the collection of quality biological specimens for laboratory testing, distribution of specimens to proper departments, and proper preparation and handling of specimens for laboratory analysis.
Responsibilities (25%) Provides superior customer service by maintaining positive relations with patients during invasive procedures, responding to needs of customers of all ages, and helping to resolve exceptions. Educates patients and other laboratory clients in proper test protocol.
(25%) Accurately interprets physician orders to collect high quality specimens.
(25%) Performs invasive procedures including venipuncture, micro‑capillary collections, central line draws (where applicable) and other test procedures on patients of all age groups by following protocols, including patient preparation and administration of various glucose dosages.
(25%) Handles specimens, selecting the appropriate type to ensure high quality, reliable test results, and distributes specimens promptly to minimize turnaround time. Communicates with and prepares esoteric specimens for shipment to reference laboratories while maintaining specimen integrity.
Follows patient registration procedures where required.
Follows strict identification policies to accurately identify specimens.
Demonstrates competency in Infection Prevention and Control practices and policies.
Follows hand hygiene policies and utilizes personal protective equipment as required.
Uses the Laboratory Information System (LIS) and Hospital Information System (HIS) to schedule workload, interpret orders, retrieve billing information, and assist with patient registration in compliance with confidentiality standards.
Adheres to all laboratory policies, procedures, and federal regulations (CLIA, CAP, OSHA).
Maintains confidentiality of all medical information.
Demonstrates ability to treat patients ranging from birth to 100+ years.
Access to medication room for use of pneumatic tube station (where applicable).
All other duties as assigned.
Qualifications Driver’s License
Fingerprinting
Education High School Diploma with general studies specialization.
Experience, Training and Skills Communication, customer service, and organizational skills.
Proficiency in Microsoft® Windows.
Knowledge of specimen integrity guidelines, laboratory test and medical terminology, and current laboratory policies, procedures, and protocols preferred.
Physical and Mental Requirements Exposure to stressful situations, including public contact, trauma, grief, and death.
Ability to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitutes.
Mobility across the facility with or without an assistive device.
Vision and hearing necessary, with or without assistance.
Must sit, stand, walk for long periods and perform frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching.
Exposure to bloodborne pathogens and other potentially infectious material; must comply with bloodborne pathogen and TB testing.
Ability to handle multiple tasks independently with regular attendance and wakefulness.
Dexterity required for handling, reaching, grasping, and repetitive movements.
Light physical demand: occasionally (0‑33% of the workday) lift or carry 11‑20 lbs.; frequently (34‑66% of the workday) 10 lbs. and/or walk/stand/push/pull arm/leg controls.
