Peer Tutor - Biology

We are looking for a part‑time biology peer tutor to provide academic assistance and support to students, helping them develop competency in course work, improve study skills, and become independent learners.
Responsibilities
Provide general academic support, including tutorial services and basic skills assistance.
Help students with basic skills in the required academic area.
Offer one‑on‑one support and encouragement to develop self‑confidence and independence.
Engage tutees in active learning and support their positive attitudes toward learning.
Listen and answer questions during tutoring sessions, teaching study skills and independent learning strategies.
Attend and successfully complete required tutor training meetings.
Plan tutoring sessions using a collaborative learning approach to improve understanding, problem solving, and study skills.
Perform related duties as required.
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must be 16 years or older, have work‑permit consent, and be eligible to work in the United States.
Applicants must be actively attending a City Colleges of Chicago institution.
Applicants must be enrolled in a minimum of six semester‑hour pre‑credit or credit classes.
Applicants must be pursuing an approved educational credential, degree, or certificate.
Applicants must maintain a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA (waived for first‑semester new students).
Applicants must be in "good standing" and have no City Colleges of Chicago academic restrictions.
Applicants must not be current full‑time or part‑time employees of the City Colleges of Chicago.
All positions are employment at‑will.
Knowledge, Skills, and Ability
Working knowledge of the subject area or course content to be tutored.
Some knowledge of tutoring strategies used to assist tutees in learning how to think and problem‑solve in the context of a specific discipline or subject area.
Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
Organizational and time‑management skills.
Reasoning and problem‑solving skills.
Skill in tutoring students and explaining content in more than one way.
Ability to work within a culturally diverse environment.
Ability to manage tasks, time, and maintain schedules.
Ability to guide tutoring sessions.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma required or actively pursuing a GED at City Colleges of Chicago.
Overall GPA of 3.0 and a 4.0 GPA in a specific subject matter.
Strong background in math, science, literature, or another assigned academic subject matter.
Ability to work in a one‑on‑one or team environment with flexible work hours as needed for scheduled shifts.
Prior tutoring experience preferred, but not required.
Salary: $17.00/hr
The rate paid is in accordance with City Colleges approved salary scale.
