Under general supervision of the Chief Dentist or delegated dental leader, the Periodontist will provide specialty services including implants, periodontal surgery procedures (crown lengthening, laser procedures, gingival and hard tissue surgery), education of the residents and attending dentists, among other periodontal services. Upholds the principles of WIHCC’s Vision, Mission, and Value Statements. Maintains confidentiality of all privileged information at all times.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Maintains regular attendance and punctuality.

Directs periodontal care for Service Unit dental clinic patients as well as resident cases.

Plans treatment, guides, places, and restores dental implants.

Uses and supervises the dental laser use along with the residents and attendees trained to do so.

Performs and guides residents and attendees with periodontal surgery procedures.

Educates the residents both clinically and didactically.

Provides diagnostic services through the use of history, radiographs, clinical examination, diagnostic models, and other appropriate tests.

Provides consultative and/or corrective periodontal treatment of the various classes of normal and acute dental problems. This includes treatment of difficult management cases and institutionalized patients.

Diagnoses periodontal treatment of congenital abnormalities of the oral regions.

Provides treatment of cases where dental defects cause esthetics and psychological problems.

Obtains consultation services in other specialty areas as appropriate for cases.

Provides Quality Assurance program planning, management of the Diabetic Periodontal Treatment Program.

Contributes to the establishment of policies as related to the periodontal program.

Provides quality assurance support through data review, on-site chart review and direct observation.

Provides technical guidance for service unit dentists in the proficiency of the specialty services, and the development and operation of direct and contract specialty programs and services. Travels to service unit dental clinics in order to accomplish this duty.

Requires completion of tasks or duties assigned by a supervisor.

Qualifications Minimum Qualifications:

Graduate from a CODA approved dental school in the United States or equivalent required. Completed a CODA approved advanced education training program in the United States with training specifically for periodontist required. Current Dental License in the United States required. Experience with teaching dental residents and students is preferred. Bilingual skills in English and Navajo language preferred. Must maintain a valid unrestricted and insurable driver’s license. Must successfully pass a background investigation and maintain suitable requirements for a Child Care position. This position is considered as a Child Care position, which requires a satisfactory background check investigation and is subject to the requirements of the Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act, as amended (henceforth referred as the ICPFVP Act).

Physical Demands

While performing the essential functions of this position, the employee is regularly required to walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects and equipment, reach with hands and arms, and communicate effectively by talking and hearing. The employee frequently must stand, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and may occasionally use taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move objects weighing up to 50 pounds.

Work Environment

Work is performed in an office setting or outdoor work environment with moderate noise levels. Work environment may involve exposure to physical risks, such as blood borne pathogens, hazardous chemicals, or operating potential dangerous equipment, and requires adherence to all safety protocols. Required work schedules may include evening, weekend, overnight shifts, extended hours, or irregular schedules and rotation as operational needs dictate.

As required by P.L. 93-638, absolute preference will be given to qualified Navajo applicants. If there is no qualified Navajo applicant, preference will be given to qualified American Indian applicants.
