Departmental Overview Facilities Services works to continuously improve the campus by ensuring that classrooms, laboratories and offices support teaching, learning and research. Over 400 staff members serve more than 10M square feet of campus building and 1100 acres, managing custodial services, maintenance operations, engineering and technical services, environmental services, grounds operations and the Cal Zero Waste program. Position Summary The primary purpose of this role is to help maintain equipment, collect materials and provide support services for the integrated solid waste management programs offered by the Zero Waste department. Application Review Date First review date: 12/18/2025 Responsibilities Operational Assistance Deliver containers and apply signage/stickers for clients, providing appropriate verbal and written instructions. Recommend service changes and signage to increase diversion and operational efficiency. Relocate recycling, compost and refuse receptacles as necessary and handle emergency needs. Coordinate removal and sorting of materials from loading for recycling, composting and reuse. Load, unload and sort materials into trucks, compactors and balers. Use hand trucks and pallet jacks to move dumpsters, wheeled carts, bales and containers. Operate compacting, baling and dumping equipment. Clean and wash receptacles and loading docks; remove stickers, flyers, posters, decals, graffiti and chalk graffiti from bins and buildings. Maintenance Ensure all dumpsters, carts, bins, equipment and enclosures have proper signage and labels. Assemble, maintain and repair dumpsters, wheeled carts and bins. Perform preventive maintenance on recycling, compost and refuse equipment. Material Processing and Evaluation Coordinate with campus clients, Environmental Health & Safety and surplus to remove materials. Monitor garbage, compost and recycling sites; recommend service changes. Maintain a log of material recovery. Coordinate tasks with truck drivers, supervisor and specialists. Documentation Tally material sorting information and input into Excel daily. Use work order system to track customer requests. Additional Duties Adhere to all university and departmental safety guidelines. Attend required safety training. Perform other duties as assigned. Required Qualifications Minimum 12 months of experience in grounds, recycling, compost bin route operations or equivalent combination. Ability to operate and maintain dumpsters, bins, equipment, compactors, balers and vehicles. Strong written and oral communication in English. Positive interaction with campus community and ability to work in a multicultural environment. Knowledge of recyclables and compostable materials management. Safe work practices and knowledge of related tools and equipment. Ability to lift up to 75 pounds, walk up to ½ mile, bend, stoop, and work indoors/outdoors in varying weather. Flexibility to work shifts from 4:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., weekdays, weekends, holidays and overtime. Salary & Benefits Hourly range: $25.29 – $33.38. This is a full‑time (40 h/week) career position eligible for UC Benefits. This is a non‑exempt, biweekly‑paid position. How To Apply Submit resume and cover letter.
