The salary will be as follows: employees with less than 2 years of city service – $18.56 per hour; employees with 2 years or more of city service – $20.82 per hour.
The New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) is committed to increasing opportunities for low- and moderate-income New Yorkers by providing safe, affordable housing and facilitating access to social and community services. NYCHA’s Department of Resident Economic Empowerment & Sustainability (REES) works to develop and implement programs, policies, and collaborations to support residents’ economic opportunities.
NYCHA was awarded a $3.7 million grant from HUD to bring a Jobs Plus Program to Coney Island, Brooklyn. The program offers services to work‑able residents in designated public housing developments and includes employer linkages, job placement and counseling, educational advancement, financial counseling and rent incentive, and community building.
NYCHA REES is seeking three (3) part‑time (25 hrs. per week) Community Coaches for its Coney Island Jobs Plus Program. The Community Coaches will work with residents of Surfside Gardens, Coney Island Houses 1, and Coney Island Houses 1 (Site 4&5) to inform them about Jobs Plus services and motivate enrollment. They will also help plan outreach events.
**Candidates must be NYCHA residents residing in** Surfside Gardens, Coney Island Houses 1, or Coney Island Houses 1 (Site 4&5) in Brooklyn; must have excellent communication skills, be well respected, and have a working knowledge of the local community; must be resourceful, committed to improving their community, and willing to build on existing relationships to engage neighbors. They must be sociable and able to engage others in conversation. The Community Coaches work under the direct supervision of the Coney Island Jobs Plus Program Manager.
Responsibilities
Serve as a paid member of Coney Island Jobs Plus to market various aspects of the program, including door‑to‑door flyer distribution, posting information, word‑of‑mouth, social media, hosting events, and community events. Conduct home visits, office visits, and/or phone contact, as directed.
Act as a liaison between residents and the Jobs‑Plus team. Provide factual information to encourage participation and dispel challenges.
Assist in hosting resident orientations and workshops to engage and inform residents about the Jobs Plus program and its services.
Work in collaboration with Jobs Plus staff and community partners to create innovative outreach strategies.
Inform residents about employment, training, education, and economic development opportunities. Assist with surveys to build understanding of community priorities and make recommendations to the team regarding unmet needs.
Provide input on strategies to create an environment that encourages work and engagement in the community.
Serve as a mentor to residents to help them achieve goals. Provide informal peer‑to‑peer coaching for residents needing guidance or experiencing crises.
Assist Jobs Plus staff to plan, coordinate, and implement internal and external events, networking meetings, job fairs, and other special events and programs.
Market the Jobs Plus Earned Income Disallowance (JPEID) program and other incentives.
Attend staff meetings and trainings.
Complete appropriate documentation, maintain an organized filing system, and submit all paperwork to supervisor on time.
Flexible work hours are required and include occasional evening and weekend work.
Perform other duties as assigned.

THIS IS A TEMPORARY, GRANT‑FUNDED POSITION, with an anticipated end date of January 31, 2029.
Candidates must be NYCHA residents residing in Surfside Gardens, Coney Island Houses 1, or Coney Island Houses 1 (Site 4&5) in Brooklyn.
Minimum Qualifications The ability to understand and carry out simple instructions; in some cases the ability to speak Spanish may be required. There are no formal education requirements for this position.
Preferred Skills
Strong interpersonal and customer service skills, including conflict resolution.
Ability to develop and maintain relationships with community groups, educational institutes, resident councils, and employees.
Ability to demonstrate and maintain harmonious and effective relationships with residents, co‑workers, community‐based organizations, and the general public.
Must be able to communicate and handle a diverse population of people.
Bilingual (Spanish, Russian, or Mandarin) is preferred.
