Utility Engineer I Description Utility Engineer I is responsible for the operation, maintenance and repair of the college’s mechanical and electrical systems. Position is on the Essex Campus, First Shift, Tuesday through Saturday 6:30 am through 3:00 pm.
Minimum Requirements
High school diploma or equivalent. Advanced degree, and CFC Certification preferred.
Formal specialized training in the operation and maintenance of HVAC, mechanical and electrical systems.
A minimum of two (2) years of progressively responsible recent maintenance experience in building mechanical systems, heating and cooling systems, pneumatic and digital controls and energy management, including experience with commercial boilers (minimum 250 H.P.) and large chillers (minimum 250 tons).
Journeyman HVAC License or Second Grade Stationary Engineers License required. First Grade preferred.
Flexibility and ability to change shift when requested.
Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record of less than five (5) points.
Ability to participate in bloodborne pathogens training within six (6) months of employment.
Hepatitis B vaccination or a signed waiver.
Background Check
Candidates may be required to successfully pass a background investigation, to include driving, fingerprint and criminal history evaluation.
Candidates may be required to successfully complete a pre‑hire, post‑offer physical examination, including drug screening.
This is an Essential Position and the employee must be available for building emergencies, and to perform regular duties or other assigned duties when the campus is closed to students and non‑essential staff. Subject to 24‑hour standby or call‑in for building emergencies. May be required to work overtime or special hours as needed.
Plant Operations / HVAC
Operates and maintains all mechanical and electrical equipment of the college, including chillers and boilers.
Maintains, repairs, and replaces hot water, condenser, and chilled water systems, including pumps, control valves, heat exchangers, cooling towers, and related controls.
Maintains, repairs, and replaces air‑moving, heating, cooling, humidification, and filtering equipment and systems such as, but not limited to, fans, heat pumps, fan coil units, rooftop air conditioning systems, electronic and pneumatic modulating thermostats, humidistats, duct stats and volume controls.
Records equipment operating parameters; maintains all necessary operating logs and records; as well as, prepares reports, as required.
Operates all equipment with college schedules through building automation system.
Installs, maintains, troubleshoots, adjusts, calibrates and repairs electric, electronic, and pneumatic control system components associated with heating and cooling systems.
Assigns analog and digital points, start/stop, status, and mode control through computer programming in building automation/energy management system.
Electrical / Mechanical / Plumbing
Adjusts, maintains and makes repairs to refrigeration and cooling equipment and all other electrical or electro‑mechanical equipment.
Responds to plumbing and heating/air conditioning issues; repairs and replaces defective faucets and small pipes, clears clogged drains, and operates various sewer machines to clear sewer and water lines.
Inspects, tests, maintains, repairs, and replaces electrical equipment, including motors, emergency generators, uninterruptible power supply systems, relays, magnetic starters and variable frequency drives.
Inspects, tests, maintains, repairs, and replaces wiring circuits, cable, wire, conduit, circuit break panels, fuses, and switches.
Performs minor electrical repairs to wiring and lighting systems in building interiors and exteriors, including connections, outlets, panels, fixtures, switches, etc., and maintains safe working conditions of the same.
Functional Duties
Performs preventative maintenance and documents activity on building equipment, as necessary and required.
May lead and instruct lesser skilled workers, as required.
Makes suggestions when appropriate for building and structure modifications to improve operational efficiency and reduce maintenance costs.
Assists supervisor in monitoring supplies inventory, maintenance of shop equipment and general work area housekeeping.
Participates in snow removal or duties as assigned in response to college emergencies, as necessary and/or directed.
Effectively performs in a service environment and follows all county, state, college, and departmental policies and procedures.
