Intermediate Surface Mining Engineer

Your Opportunity Stantec’s Mining Practice is hiring an experienced Surface Intermediate Mining Engineer to join their growing team in the Western U.S. The position is based in one of our many Western U.S. offices, hybrid, or remote.
The successful candidate will execute mining engineering and related projects for studies and projects of varying size and complexity, from initial concepts through to execution. This person may be required to work on several projects at a time. Our projects include many different commodities including metals, aggregates, and industrial minerals. Experience in metallic minerals is a plus and should be highlighted in your application.
Key Responsibilities
Work with clients to deliver safe, responsible, and innovative solutions.
Collaborate with geologists, geotechnical engineers, and civil engineers to design mine access, determine mining methods, mine development, and mine infrastructure; prepare mine development and production plans and schedules.
Estimate performance productivities and support the preparation of capital and operating costs.
Use mining software programs such as MineSight 3D, Deswik, Minemax, Vulcan, Carlson or similar to complete technical assignments.
Attend meetings and interface with clients, external consultants, contractors, sub‑contractors, and vendors.
Participate in technical reviews.
Conduct quality assurance and quality control on own projects and peers’ projects.
Support the development of standards and specifications for the mining group.
Prepare technical reports.
Support business development efforts and proposal preparation.
International or national travel can be expected with the possibility of extended stays.
Capabilities and Credentials
Strong knowledge of, interpretation, and application of mining standards and best practices.
Thorough understanding of mining engineering concepts and ability to communicate ideas to others.
Proven problem‑solving skills.
Excellent organizational skills.
Ability to perform in a dynamic and fast‑paced environment.
Driver of a positive work environment.
Expertise in pit and phase optimization using Whittle, MMSO, or NPVS software (Whittle preferred).
Proven experience with MineSight 3D, Deswik, or MineMax mine design software; experience in creating optimized mine plans using MineSight MPSO or Deswik (Scheduler and LHS) software is a plus.
Experience with MineMax is a plus and should be noted on your application.
Experience with Vulcan or Carlson will be considered.
Prior work in prefeasibility and feasibility project phases is preferred.
Experience in mine valuation studies is a plus.
Familiar with Mine Health and Safety Regulations.
Valid driver’s licence required.
Education and Experience
Mining Engineering Degree from an accredited university.
8‑10 years of engineering experience in surface metals, industrial, or construction aggregate mining.
Engineering and operations experience at an operating mine considered an asset.
Currently licensed or willingness to pursue a P.Eng. (Professional Engineer) and/or QP (Qualified Person) during the first two years of employment.
Pays and Benefits
Locations in CO, HI, IL, MD & various CA, NJ Areas: $100,000.00 – $145,000.00 annually.
In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. The final compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. Certain roles are bonus‑eligible.
Regular full‑time or part‑time employees (minimum 20 hours per week) have access to medical, dental, and vision plans, a wellness program, health‑saving accounts, flexible spending accounts, 401(k) plan, employee stock purchase program, life and AD&D insurance, short‑term and long‑term disability plans, emergency travel benefits, tuition reimbursement, professional membership fee coverage, and paid family leave. Regular full‑time or part‑time employees receive ten paid holidays each calendar year.
