As an Assistant Plant Operator (APO) you will be responsible for proper, safe, compliant, and efficient operations of the WTE boiler combustion, steam generation, and distribution equipment and systems in the field. In addition, you will conduct extensive operating logs, process adjustments, and rounds on air pollution control (APC) systems and components, turbine generator and associated equipment, boiler feed pumps, condensate pumps, make-up pumps, dump condenser and associated equipment, turbine lube and control oil systems, electrical distribution systems, wastewater system, demineralized water system, process water system, and cooling towers to assure that the facility meets its operational, environmental, and safety commitments while operating safely and efficiently.
Position Responsibilities
Perform inspections, make effective rounds, and take appropriate action to maintain boiler, combustion system, turbine generator, and APC systems within prescribed limits.
Assist the Plant Operator in the daily operation and maintenance of the plant in the field. Investigate changes in instrument readings and equipment operation, and notify the Plant Operator and/or Shift Supervisor of operational inconsistencies or other concerns.
Make required turbine/generator APC and other critical inspections regularly as described in facility policy and procedures. Recognize and mitigate operating difficulties; adapt to changing plant conditions to maximize plant safety, compliance, and efficiency while minimizing downtime.
Assist as needed in the daily operation of the Control Room, including operations of the Distributed Control System (DCS) for plant system control and adjustment, operations of the Turbine Generator through the installed Human Machine Interface (HMI), and preparation of lockout/tag‑out permits, confined space permits, hot‑work permits, etc.
Perform daily routine inspections and services of assigned equipment, troubleshoot equipment, and report all malfunctioning equipment through direct report, log reporting, and issuance of work orders.
Conduct comprehensive equipment “rounds” and system operations inspections per established frequency, procedure, and standards. Conduct starting, stopping, and adjustment of systems and components as notified by control room operator and/or shift supervisor.
Perform lockout and tag‑out of equipment in support of maintenance activities.
Provide guidance and support to junior field operators to include Crane, Auxiliary, and Utility Operators to maintain safe and efficient operations.
Effectively monitor and control assigned operations systems and have a strong working knowledge of boiler, turbine, air pollution control, and auxiliary equipment operations.
Manage critical events and plant upset conditions, prioritizing tasks during emergencies and providing clear directions in operational, safety, and environmental tasks.
Respond to operational alarms, taking immediate corrective action through direct action or dispatch of appropriate field operator.
Demonstrate a solid understanding of operational best practices, including the ability to solve problems and make sound decisions.
Document operations on logs, providing comments that facilitate problem tracking and clearly announce tasks that need to be performed.
Operate all aspects of the demineralization system, including making required adjustments safely and accurately. Perform water testing and treatment using knowledge of boiler water chemistry, maintain set parameters, and complete accurate and timely water tests; record data and perform chemical adjustments with assistance.
With guidance, ensure that all aspects of the APC system operate safely and accurately. Adjust the APC system to achieve reliable and efficient performance, working with maintenance to troubleshoot problems.
Maintain clean, neat, and orderly work areas at all times.
Complete the Corporate and Plant Training Programs within the prescribed time frame.
Maintain a positive work environment by acting and communicating in a manner that fosters good relationships with customers, clients, vendors, co‑workers, and management.
Education and Experience
High School Diploma or GED (accredited).
ASME QRO provisional certification preferred; otherwise the candidate must be able to sit for the examination within one year of the start date.
3 years working in a power plant operation or related experience.
Knowledge and understanding of the operation of a steam‑generating power plant.
Mechanical abilities sufficient to perform a wide range of minor equipment maintenance such as valve maintenance, pressure part gaskets and fasteners, pump packing adjustments, removal of inspection and access covers, servicing of strainers/hydraulics, and lubricating oil purification.
Must be able to work rotating shifts and overtime.
Physical Demand
Handle tools, equipment, and fine motor skills.
Walk, stand, sit, and climb; lift/carry up to 50 lbs.
Wear a full‑face respirator and operate a 1.5‑inch fire hose operating at 125 PSI to extinguish fire; operate handheld extinguishers to 200 lb portable units.
Climb and walk on heights often greater than 4 feet; navigate catwalks, deck grating, and uneven surfaces.
Access confined spaces and pressure vessels through standard 12” by 16” man‑ways.
Handle close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, whether corrected or otherwise.
Operate in various weather conditions; work close to high‑temperature, high‑pressure steam systems, ash, dust, chemicals, and heavy industrial equipment.
