Summer 2026, UNC Medical Center is hiring New Graduate Nurses to join our Medicine Progressive Care Unit.

Unit Overview The Medicine Progressive Care Unit is a 24‑bed unit equipped with state‑of‑the‑art technology to promote efficiency and excellence in patient care. It serves patients with a broad range of medical and pulmonary diagnoses and can accommodate up to six ventilated patients.
Position Details • 36 hours per week (day/night and weekend rotation). • Self‑scheduling to meet individual and department needs. • Candidates must be licensed as an RN in North Carolina prior to the first day of employment. • Eligible for excellent benefits, including health, dental, retirement options, and a generous PTO plan.
Eligibility Requirements To qualify for the UNC Medical Center New Graduate Residency program, candidates must:
Be in the final semester of nursing school or have graduated within the past 12 months of the anticipated start date, and have worked as an RN for fewer than six months.
Be a New Graduate Nurse transitioning from academia to practice.
Summary Provides competent clinical nursing care consistent with professional standards. Reports and is accountable to the Nurse Manager/Director. The Clinical Nurse is responsible for coordinating and delivering patient care utilizing the nursing process in a hospital setting.
Responsibilities
Education – Participate in identifying and meeting learning needs of self; attend education programs; use patient education materials; assess readiness to learn of the patient, family, and caregivers; assess developmental level affecting learning.
Evaluation of Care – Identify expected patient outcomes; seek guidance as needed; participate in interdisciplinary discussions; communicate relevant information to promote continuity of care.
Implementation – Demonstrate competence in caring for patients with complex problems; perform bedside point‑of‑care testing; utilize organization and nursing standards; organize and prioritize care; consult resources for complex care issues and high‑risk discharge planning.
Leadership – Develop goals to promote professional growth; achieve goals within identified timeframe; facilitate interdepartmental collaboration; participate in unit goal development; promote cost‑effective care; provide feedback to coworkers; maintain a safe, clean, secure environment for all.
Patient Assessment – Recognize data from complex situations to determine care priorities; synthesize assessment data into meaningful whole; anticipate discharge needs; build families' advocacy ability.
Planning – Collaborate with patient/family to prepare or update the plan of care; use multidisciplinary resources; apply full range of communication; identify cultural and ethnic issues; prioritize tasks for complex patients.
Research – Read applicable journals; bring ideas and questions to staff for assessment of applicability.
Qualifications & Requirements
Education Requirements:
Graduation from a school of professional nursing.
If hired after January 6, 2014, must be enrolled within four years of employment and obtain a bachelor’s degree in Nursing or a master’s degree in Nursing within seven years of employment date.
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina by the first day of clinical care.
Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider certification.
Professional Experience Requirements:
No prior experience required.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities Requirements:
Knowledge of professional nursing practice.
Ability to deliver safe, high‑quality patient care.
Strong communication and teamwork skills.
