Clinician Investigator, Assistant Professor The University of Virginia School of Medicine – Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism and the Center for Diabetes Technology (CDT) is seeking a physician/scientist to serve as a joint tenure‑track, Clinician Investigator faculty member. The appointment is 75% research and 25% clinical, with rank and tenure status dependent upon qualifications.

The successful candidate will have a strong commitment to improving the fundamental understanding of diabetes by advancing translational research that supports preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic strategies.

About the Division and Center The Division comprises 34 faculty members (9 full professors, 7 associate professors, 9 assistant professors, 8 nurse practitioners, and 7 emeritus professors) and 6 endocrine fellows. It has produced leaders in national professional societies, including former presidents of the Endocrine Society, American Diabetes Association, Pituitary Society, and American Society of Bone and Mineral Research.

The Center is directed by Professor Boris Kovatchev, Ph.D., a world‑renowned researcher in diabetes technology and data science. Associate Director for Research Professor Mark Breton, Ph.D., has developed advanced artificial pancreas (AP) algorithms, and Professor Sue Brown, MD, leads the Center’s clinical trials program. The Center’s grant portfolio includes numerous NIH, RO1, and UO1 grants and long‑term industry projects, and its clinical trials have achieved publication in prestigious journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine.

Responsibilities

Conduct translational, clinical, or basic science research focused on diabetes prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.

Collaborate with clinicians, physician‑scientists, and ancillary service providers to coordinate clinical activities.

Mentor junior faculty, residents, and fellows toward independence in research.

Engage in grant writing and secure external funding for research initiatives.

Publish scientific findings in peer‑reviewed journals and present at national conferences.

Qualifications

M.D. degree with board certification in Internal Medicine.

ABIM board‑eligible or certified in Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism by the appointment start date.

Successful track record in clinical, translational, or basic research.

Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
