In this role, you’ll assess the health of MISO’s markets—focusing on reliability, efficiency, and incentives that drive desired participant behavior. You’ll also recommend and evaluate new wholesale market design initiatives that deliver better outcomes for stakeholders and end-use customers. As a Principal Engineer, you’ll provide technical leadership, guide teammates, and deliver progress on projects that strengthen the team’s analytical capabilities.
In Your First Year, Success Means You
Perform engineering, statistical, and economic analyses on market operations and outcomes
Understand how MISO’s market systems work and interact
Assess market health, report events, and validate outcomes against design requirements
Collect and analyze data to identify trends and patterns
Implement alerts and screens for anomalous outcomes
Use visualization tools to clearly communicate findings
Present recommendations to internal and external stakeholders
Streamline and automate analytical processes
Enhance market models, procedures, and algorithms
Evaluate compliance with tariff requirements and recommend improvements
Skills And Experience Needed For Our Principal Engineer
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, Electrical & Computer Engineering, Electrical & Electronic Engineering, or Electronics & Computer Engineering Technology
8 years of relevant experience, ideally 12 years
At least 2 years of specialized experience in one or more of the following areas:
Power system analysis and operations (and related software development) or related engineering analysis (e.g. PSSe, PowerGem, Plexos)
Statistical or econometric analysis (e.g. R, Python, PowerBI, Azure, VBA)
Wholesale electric markets analysis and knowledge of its standard market design
Optimization algorithms
While not required, the following skills and experiences are highly valued:
Master’s or PhD degree
Experience in deregulated wholesale electricity markets or utilities
Experience working with a Regional Transmission Organization (RTO) or market participant in the energy industry
NERC certification
Appropriate level will be determined based upon experience and knowledge.
Compensation & Benefits The base salary compensation range being offered for this role is $145,000-$170,000 USD annually. Base salary range for this position is included in accordance with requirements of various state/local pay transparency legislation. Please note that salaries may vary for different individuals in the same role based on several factors, including but not limited to location of the role, individual competencies, education/professional certifications, and qualifications/experience.
Position is also eligible for an annual bonus if individual performance and company objectives are met. At MISO we offer a comprehensive benefits package, including 401k, vacation, sick and safe time, available on your first day of employment.
