Controls Systems Engineer (Facilities/BMS/BAS) HDR is looking for a Control Systems Engineer to serve in a project leadership role within our national Control Systems practice. This role will focus on building management (BMS) and automated facility support systems, coordinating with clients and multi‑disciplinary teams to deliver complete control system solutions across diverse market sectors.

Primary Responsibilities

Work under the supervision of a Senior Control Systems Engineer to produce deliverable packages for several concurrent projects – writing/editing instrumentation and controls specifications, selecting instrumentation, developing sequence of operations, creating control system drawings.

Coordinate the work of control system engineers with the remainder of the multi‑disciplined design team, including power coordination, panel locations, remote equipment monitoring, integration to third‑party systems, networking, and device placement.

Coordinate workload to complete documents on schedule.

Track financial aspects of projects, coordinating and adjusting work effort with the team to ensure on‑budget completion.

Conduct schematic, design development, and contract document working sessions with clients.

Review shop drawing submittals, respond to RFIs, conduct field observations on construction sites, and develop reports.

Establish and maintain client relationships and participate in marketing, design, and production meetings regarding instrumentation and control systems.

Utilize CAD software including Autodesk AutoCAD and Revit products to develop and review construction documents.

Report project status, performance, and quality updates to the Control Systems Section Manager.

Serve as Engineer of Record in the responsible charge for the development of bid‑able and technically accurate control system construction documents.

Advancement to Senior Control Systems Engineer.

Preferred Qualifications

Minimum of 5 years of applicable experience.

Hands‑on experience designing BMS systems.

Knowledgeable of network, PLC or DDC hardware and software.

Knowledge of Human‑Machine Interface (HMI) software and capabilities.

Knowledge of control systems and sequence of operations for building systems including mechanical/HVAC, electrical/power, monitoring, lighting, etc.

Must have knowledge of network, PLC or DDC hardware/software, and HMI software used in BMS applications.

Data center experience a plus.

Healthcare experience a plus.

Network design experience for BMS a plus.

Knowledge of multiple communication platforms and protocols including BACnet, LonWorks, Modbus TCP, Modbus RTU, Ethernet‑I/P a plus.

Demonstrated knowledge of cybersecurity considerations for industrial control or SCADA systems a plus.

PLC programming and configuration a plus.

DDC programming and configuration a plus.

Local candidates are preferred.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.

Professional Engineer (PE) license.

PLC/WTP and WWTP software programming experience.

Hands‑on experience designing SCADA systems, including schematics and loops. Experience managing control systems projects.

Knowledge of automation hardware including, but not limited to Allen‑Bradley, Emerson, Foxboro, Modicon, Siemens, and GE.

Knowledge of automation software including, but not limited to Wonderware, iFix, FactoryTalk, VTScada, Ignition.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office products.
