Substation Senior Structural Engineer HDR is seeking a Substation Senior Structural Engineer (Substation Sr. SE) to join our nationally ranked team of Power Delivery professionals. The role focuses on structural design for high‑voltage switchyard and substation projects up to 500 kV, including steel structures and foundation analysis.

Responsibilities

Lead, oversee, review, or execute detailed engineering tasks for substation structural members such as rolled steel shapes, lattice steel framing, and folded plate tubular steel shapes.

Perform foundation design for substation structures, including drilled piers, spread footings, driven piles, and other types, using industry‑standard software.

Support physical substation layout designs including plans, elevations/sections, details, and bills of materials.

Prepare or review construction and material specifications.

Assign project tasks and provide technical guidance to team members.

Coordinate quality checks and reviews of deliverables in line with HDR Quality Management Systems.

Collaborate with transmission line civil/structural engineers and other disciplines to share resources and develop standards.

Mentor, train, and supervise junior engineers, Project Engineers, EITs, or CAD/Designers.

Lead multiple projects concurrently across different locations.

Engage in technical development through training, seminars, technical papers, or conference presentations.

Participate in project reviews as needed.

Travel may be required.

Preferred / Desired Qualifications

Master’s degree in Structural Engineering.

SE license or ability to obtain; license in Hawaii or California is a plus.

Technical design experience with high‑voltage electrical switchyard and substation projects up to 500 kV.

Familiarity with NESC, NEC, IEEE, ANSI, ASCE‑113 and other industry standards.

Experience with design software such as PLS‑Tower, Mathcad Prime, STAAD, RISA, MFAD, L‑Pile, or equivalent.

Consulting firm experience.

Minimum 10 years of technical design experience in high‑voltage substation projects.

Knowledge of AISC‑360, ASCE‑7, ACI‑318 and related standards.

Cooperative teamwork across regional, departmental, and technical managers.

Strong written and verbal communication and problem‑solving skills.

Self‑starter with ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.

Minimum of 10 years of structural engineering experience related to building design.

Professional engineering license recognized in the state of employment.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, RAM, ETABS, SAFE, or similar analytical software.

Experience in design calculations, layouts, and detailing in steel, concrete, masonry, and wood.

Understanding of gravity and lateral analysis.

Experience with an architectural, engineering, or consulting firm.

Compensation The targeted salary range for this position (based on experience and location) is $132,107 – $204,500.
