Your Job Georgia-Pacific Big Island mill in Big Island, Va is seeking innovative and forward thinkers to consider joining our team as a Reliability Engineer. This position will report to the Reliability Manager. The Reliability Engineer will work with other departments (operations, engineering, maintenance, consultants, vendors, contractors) to develop and execute strategies to increase reliability. It requires a highly motivated individual who enjoys working in a multi-faceted environment. The ideal candidate should also have a strong sense of personal drive, a desire to develop expertise, and the ability to work without constant supervision. The role will require team skills, critical thinking, and problem‑solving skills and will be expected to provide technical, engineering support, and troubleshooting advice to maintenance/operational areas.

Our Team Georgia-Pacific's Big Island, VA containerboard mill is located at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains on the James River and produces the paper used to make boxes. Half of the production is made from 100% recycle fiber and the other half uses about 25% recycle fiber. The mill employs about 330 people.

What You Will Do

Actively participate in driving a safety culture where employees address unsafe conditions, unsafe behaviors and make suggestions for improvements.

Support Environmental, Health & Safety excellence and operational areas with a focus on reliability improvements.

Provide leadership for continuous improvement in asset and site reliability, mentoring hourly direct reports.

Lead and support Lubrication and Vibration Technicians in program execution, including oil analysis, new technology implementation, and material procurement.

Ensure adherence to lubrication and vibration routes, resolve Atonix Alerts, and optimize lubrication products.

Develop, implement, and support equipment and operational asset strategies with predictive/preventive technologies such as:

vibration analysis, ultrasonic, infrared, NDT, thermography, electric motor testing, precision maintenance, lubrication, or oil analysis to extend the usable life of the assets.

Participate or lead Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA) efforts, to identify root causes of complex and/or repetitive problems and put in place executable corrective actions.

Analyze operational targets and equipment costs to identify gaps utilizing data driven analysis for potential improvement solutions. Collaborate with maintenance, operations, engineering, or others to vet opportunities and/or execute improvements.

Work with other Georgia Pacific Reliability subject matter experts (SME) to share knowledge. Utilize appropriate strategies to improve equipment or operational strategies. Use GP reliability network to keep current with the latest technology, tools, and best practices.

Ensure inspections, PMs, and QA/QC methods deployed can identify the damage mechanisms as early as possible.

Drive a culture of continuous improvement for contribution-motivated employees to ensure a high level of value creation.

Who You Are (Basic Qualifications)

Bachelor's degree in engineering or Five (5) + years of mechanical/reliability experience in manufacturing, industrial, chemistry, oil & gas, or military environment

Experience with reliability improvement tools to reduce unplanned downtime

Basic understanding of lubrication and best practices

Experience using Microsoft Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, Outlook, and/or other tools to communicate and analyze data

What Will Put You Ahead

Industrial reliability and/or maintenance experience

Pulp & Paper experience

Experience in implementing effective reliability strategies that support a culture of continuous improvement Certification or continued education in reliability applications, practices, and management

Experience utilizing Root Cause Analysis (RCA), Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA) or similar programs

Supervisory experience in a manufacturing environment with responsibility for direct reports

Experience working in vibration monitoring systems

Vibration training and/or certifications

Lubrication training and/or certifications
