ERM is hiring a Field Herpetologist to help design and conduct protocol-level surveys for a project in Merced County, California. Successful candidates must be flexible and responsive to a changing work environment where schedules and tasks fluctuate according to the needs of the project. The role requires technical skills, strong organization, and communication skills. It is part-time (11+ hours/week on average), limited-term for 12 months, with possibility of extension.
Responsibilities
Assist with survey design and leading protocol-level surveys (terrestrial and aquatic) for California tiger salamander and California red-legged frog.
Provide guidance and on-site oversight for installing drift fences and pitfall traps for California tiger salamander.
Assist with western spadefoot surveys.
Collect survey data electronically (tablet and GPS).
Perform other duties as assigned or required.
Comply with ERM’s safety program.
Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Environmental Science, or a related discipline (preferred).
Minimum 7 years of experience designing survey plans and leading protocol-level surveys (terrestrial and aquatic) for California tiger salamander and California red-legged frog.
Current permits: 10(a)1(A) recovery permit for California tiger salamander and California red-legged frog, Specific Use Scientific Collecting Permit (including California red-legged frog), and CDFW Memorandum of Understanding for California tiger salamander.
Experience conducting western spadefoot surveys.
Experience installing drift fences and pitfall traps for California tiger salamander.
Ability to work safely outdoors in variable weather and challenging terrain.
Strong attention to detail, organization, and communication skills.
Willingness and ability to travel with overnight stays possible.
Valid driver’s license.
Pay Transparency Annual base pay: $93,023 – $118,233 ($44.72/hr. – $56.84/hr. USD) for this limited-term, non‑exempt position. Pay within the range depends on education, experience, skills, location, performance, and other factors. Bonus pay may be available, but casual and fixed‑term/Flexforce employees are not bonus eligible.
