Purpose and Scope The professional registered nurse Outpatient RN CAP 1 is an entry‑level designation into the Clinical Advancement Program (CAP). The position is accountable and responsible for providing and coordinating clinically competent care including assessment, planning, intervention and evaluation for an assigned group of patients. This may include delegation of appropriate tasks to direct patient care staff including but not limited to RNs, LVN/LPNs and patient care technicians. As a member of the End Stage Kidney Disease (ESKD) health care team, the RN participates in decision‑making, teaching, leadership functions and quality improvement activities that enhance patient care outcomes and facility operations.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Perform essential functions under the direction of the supervisor and in collaboration with the clinical educator or preceptor.

Collect and analyze patient data pre‑during‑post hemodialysis treatment; document in the medical record; adjust treatment plans as indicated and notify the appropriate team members.

Assess, collaborate, and document patient/family learning needs; provide ongoing education.

Direct and provide, in collaboration with care staff, all aspects of safe and effective delivery of hemodialysis therapy to assigned patients.

Administer medications per prescription or approved algorithms; document justification and effectiveness.

Initiate or assist with emergency response measures.

Serve as a resource for the healthcare team; participate in staff training and orientation.

Ensure correct laboratory collection, processing, and shipping; reschedule missed or insufficient collections.

Identify expected outcomes; update nursing assessment and plan of care in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team.

Ensure patient awareness of transplant and treatment modality options.

Complete CAP requirements to advance in the program.

Perform other duties assigned by the supervisor.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

Provide direct patient care involving heavy lifting, moving patients, and assisting with ambulation; equipment and coworkers may help.

Frequent, prolonged standing; ability to bend over.

Might need to move machines and equipment up to 200 lbs; lift chemical and water solutions up to 30 lbs as high as 5 ft.

Work environment: health care facility with air temperature control and moderate noise levels.

Exposure to infectious and contagious diseases/materials possible.

Desk and computer work, interaction with patients, staff, and physicians.

May require travel to training sites or other facilities; may be asked to perform functions in other locations with similar demands.

Supervision

Oversight of patient care technicians/LPNs/LVNs/RNs as team leader or nurse in charge after meeting following criteria:

Successful completion of all FKC education and training requirements for new employees.

Minimum 9 months experience as an RN.

Minimum 3 months experience in chronic/acute hemodialysis as an RN.

Education and Licensure

Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.

Current state licensure.

Current or successful completion of CPR BLS certification.

Must meet state practice requirements.

Experience and Required Skills

Entry level RN with less than 2 years of nephrology nursing experience.

Chronic/acute hemodialysis experience (preferred).

Compensation Hourly rate: $33 - $56 per hour
