SLR Consulting is seeking a full‑time Principal / Senior Principal Engineer with over 20 years of tailings engineering experience to join our Mine Waste Engineering (MWE) team. Preferred locations include Denver, Reno, or Phoenix. The successful candidate must have experience in the design, construction, operations and monitoring of Tailings Storage Facilities (TSFs) and have served as an Engineer of Record (EOR) or Deputy EOR for a TSF.
This position is part of an innovative and collaborative global team that works in the mining sector. It offers the exciting opportunity to lead the MWE group and mentor staff. The candidate will play a key role in establishing a strong team, fostering a collaborative environment, and driving the growth and success of the group.
The ideal candidate will have active client management experience, expertise in internal staff management, and the ability to coordinate multiple project teams and business development. Excellent communication skills and the ability to review and provide feedback on proposals, reports, and other technical documents are essential.

Responsibilities
Audit, review, design, construction, and remediation of tailings structures at all project stages (pre‑feasibility, feasibility, detailed design, construction, operation, closure).
Undertake desk‑based studies using data from multiple sources.
Conduct due diligence reviews.
Perform Dam Safety Reviews (DSRs) and Dam Safety Inspections (DSIs).
Project management and coordination.
Report and proposal writing.
Mentorship of employees.
Travel to sites.
Client‑facing activities and growth of new opportunities.Provide clear, concise, business‑focused findings, recommendations, and options on client deliverables.
Collaborate in a team atmosphere to meet timelines, requirements, and budget goals.
Qualifications / Education / Memberships
Previous experience in the design, construction, and surveillance of TSFs with specific experience as EOR or Deputy EOR.
Minimum 15 years of tailings experience.
Licensed as a Professional Engineer in the US and/or Canada, or immediately eligible for registration.
Passion for technical excellence, mentorship, and continuous improvement.
M.Sc. in a related engineering field is advantageous.
Ability to review reports and conduct audits.
Capability to manage people, technical teams, and mentor junior staff.
Experience working with multidisciplinary teams on mining projects.
Demonstrated project management skills, including scheduling, budgeting, and the ability to lead, train, and mentor junior staff.
Familiarity with GISTM, CDA, USSD, and ICOLD.
Proven ability in business development to build a backlog of work for a tailings engineering technical team.
Willingness to travel by car and airplane, including overnight travel for domestic or international projects.
