Senior Dams and Reservoirs Engineer
We are seeking a Senior Dam Engineer to support our dam safety practice in the United States. This new position will assist FEMA, state dam safety agencies, and dam owners in enhancing dam safety and will be based in one of our HUB offices in Atlanta, GA; Austin, TX; Laurel, MD; Houston, TX; Las Vegas, NV; Orlando, FL; Tampa, FL; or Raleigh, NC, while also providing nationwide virtual support.
Overview AtkinsRéalis provides dam engineering as a core service internationally with high-accomplished centers of expertise in the United Kingdom and Canada. In the U.S. we support the National Dam Safety Program with FEMA, states, and municipal governments, and we are expanding our presence to establish a full dam practice and leverage our international expertise.
Responsibilities
SME for the FEMA Dam Preparedness Collaborative Technical Assistance (CTA) Program.
Support piloting of CTA realistic scenario‑based tabletop exercise training.
Evaluate a depth‑velocity loss rate function for dams for consideration by FEMA as an addition to HAZUS.
Develop guidance documents and best practices for dam safety.
Support the Future of Flood Risk Data (FFRD) initiative.
Provide extensive experience in supporting state dam safety programs and assisting dam owners regulated by the states.
Develop nationwide guidance documents, new dam safety training, and act as SME for the Dam Preparedness Cooperative Technical Assistance Program in the Western U.S.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related engineering discipline (M.S. or graduate coursework preferred). Typical incumbent has 20+ years of experience, with 15 years since bachelor’s or 14 years since master’s in dam design and safety.
PE License.
Experience working with state dam safety programs and regulatory compliance under the National Dam Safety Program.
Specialty in hydrologic and hydraulic (H&H) modeling of dams for state regulatory compliance.
Experience with GIS platforms and H&H modeling and mapping.
Preparation of Emergency Action Plans.
Expertise with HEC‑HMS and HEC‑RAS 2D modeling for dams.
Established relationships with potential clients and potential hires within state dam safety programs.

Compensation Expected compensation range: $110,700 – $184,500 annually, depending on skills, experience, and geographic location.
