Principal Scientist, Early Development Chemistry, Small Molecule Process R&D
Merck invites applications for the Principal Scientist, Early Development Chemistry, Small Molecule Process R&D position. This role will lead and oversee the scientific work of external partner teams, providing daily oversight and real‑time problem solving across synthetic route design, scouting, optimization, development, and API delivery for our small‑molecule pipeline.
Nature and Scope of Position
Reports to the Early Development Chemistry Lead within the External Capabilities group of Small Molecule Process R&D.
Provides daily scientific oversight and real‑time problem solving in synthetic route design, scouting, optimization, development, and API deliveries.
Collaborates effectively with Process Chemistry, Discovery Process Chemistry, Enabling Technologies, Chemical Engineering R&D, Analytical R&D, Quality, and other internal partner groups to ensure successful API deliveries under tight timelines.
Qualifications
Education Requirement:
Ph.D. in Synthetic Chemistry.
Required Experience:
6+ years of pharmaceutical industry experience in synthetic chemistry and proven ability to lead and inspire dynamic teams.
Strong track record of delivering results via innovation and fearless problem solving.
Experience driving the supply strategy and science of new modalities.
Excellent interpersonal, communication, negotiation, influencing, and collaboration skills.
Recognized in the pharmaceutical industry through publications and presentations in synthetic chemistry.
Travel: Yes, 25% of the time.

Salary Range $169,700.00 — $267,200.00 (based on education, qualifications, certifications, experience, geographic location, government requirements, and business needs). Eligible for annual bonus and long‑term incentives.
