The opportunity The Senior IT Manager oversees a skilled team tasked with strategically planning, implementing, optimizing, and ensuring the reliable performance of Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) and associated technologies throughout the North America paper mill division. Acting as a vital part of the digital transformation journey, this role involves close collaboration with IT Engineering and plant operational technology teams to boost operational efficiency, maintain quality standards, ensure regulatory compliance, and maximize production uptime. The position also offers guidance in product development to create strong solutions, encourages process improvement projects, and handles both project and budget management.
How you will impact Smurfit Westrock
Serve as a trusted advisor and strategic partner by interpreting business requirements to shape future processes and address operational challenges, thereby ensuring optimal system performance, enhanced user experience, and maximized business value.
Establish and nurture robust, collaborative partnerships with key stakeholders throughout the paper mill division, IT, and other pertinent departments to ensure clear communication and enhance teamwork.
Oversee the provision of MES technical services, including system implementation, configuration, testing, ongoing maintenance, reliability issue resolution, interface management, and reporting.
Ensure seamless, reliable data flow and integration between the MES layer, ERP, shop floor interfaces – DCS/PLC, OPC, Kepware, and quality systems.
Maintain continuous reliability and optimal performance of essential MES applications by implementing comprehensive disaster recovery and business continuity strategies.
Oversee relationships and contractual agreements with principal MES software vendors and implementation partners.
Enforce data governance policies to ensure the integrity and accuracy of production, quality, and performance data used for reporting and decision-making.

Significant financial expertise, relevant industry experience, and comprehensive knowledge of manufacturing processes.
Excellent analytical thinking, problem‑solving, and decision‑making skills.
Ability to facilitate and support effective action, while diligently monitoring progress to ensure superior execution.
Superior organizational skills: prioritizing tasks, ensuring attention to detail, and meeting time constraints.
Strong sense of initiative and ability to perform duties effectively with limited oversight.
Skills/Knowledge Desired
Ability to travel approximately 25%.
College degree or minimum equivalent work experience of 10 years in IT, application support, or paper mill operations.
Demonstrated proficiency in developing complex stored procedures and expressions within Microsoft SQL Server.
Expertise in shop floor interface technologies, such as DCS/PLC systems, OPC protocols, and Kepware solutions.
