We are seeking a highly motivated Restoration Design Engineer with 0-3 years of experience to join a multidisciplinary team of hydrologists, geomorphologists, ecologists, landscape architects, and engineers in Northern California. This full-time, salary-exempt, hybrid role supports multi-objective wetland and coastal restoration projects in the San Francisco Bay Area, Central Valley, and throughout California. Candidates must be willing to work in office hybrid and travel to ESA locations. Qualified candidates should be able to work in one of the following offices: San Francisco, Oakland, Sacramento, or Petaluma.
Who You Are
Recent graduate with education and professional exposure to civil engineering design, analysis, and calculations; experienced with hydraulic and hydrologic analysis methods applied to natural systems restoration, coastal resilience, flood management, and the production of design plans, specifications, and cost estimates.
Bachelor’s degree in Civil/Environmental Engineering or related degree with the ability to obtain EIT certification within one year; 2 years of applicable work experience and/or a Master’s degree is preferred.
Experience or strong interest in design and modeling software and programming such as AutoCAD, ArcGIS, HEC RAS, HEC HMS, MATLAB, Python.
Education, training, or work experience in wetland and/or marine ecology, geomorphology, and hydrology.
Effective team member with excellent oral and writing skills, capable of independent and collaborative work in a multidisciplinary environment. Able to communicate technical information clearly and concisely.
Willing to work hybrid in San Francisco, Oakland, Sacramento, or Petaluma.
What You Will Do For ESA • Support design and analysis for ecosystem restoration, climate change resilience, habitat enhancement, engineering with nature, flood management, and other water resources and civil engineering projects under the guidance of senior engineers or hydrologists. • Assist in preparing engineering analyses, design plans and cost estimates, reports, permit applications, and other project documentation. • Apply hydrologic and hydraulic models, GIS, and other tools to evaluate design alternatives and assess habitat conversion under current and future climate conditions. • Support collection of hydrographic, topographic, and other field data to inform engineering analysis and design. • Contribute to complex environmental reports and participate in meetings with ESA staff and clients. • Grow toward project management responsibilities over time.
