Overview
Principal Embedded Software Engineer role at Coherent Corp. Coherent Aerospace & Defense, Emerging Laser Subsystems Business Unit seeks an embedded software engineer to contribute to the development of advanced laser systems for defense applications. Primary Duties & Responsibilities
Software Architecture and Design: Work as a member of a cross-disciplinary team to conceptualize system solutions that meet customer requirements. Architect, design, and document software for assigned projects. Create design documentation including Software Requirements Documents, block diagrams, Software Design Documents, and Interface Control Documents. May serve as the lead software engineer on assigned projects. Software Development and Test: Develop embedded software to meet system requirements. Write software test plans and tests at various levels of integration (unit tests, target architecture tests, and tests with target electronics). Write software scripts and tools to support software development and system test. System Integration and Test Support: Develop Software Test Plans and support integration and test activities from board-level bring-up through final system test. New Business Development: Participate in writing proposals and providing cost and schedule estimates in support of new business pursuits. Technical Expertise: Serve as a subject matter expert in embedded systems and software development. Work independently with general direction, exercise judgment in methods and evaluation criteria, and lead software task planning and execution. Education & Experience
Typically requires a minimum of 9 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 7 years with a Master’s; or PhD with 4 years of experience; or equivalent experience. Skills
Significant experience in architecting and designing embedded software solutions; understanding hardware/software partitioning tradeoffs. Strong understanding of embedded processor platforms; familiarity with microcontrollers, FPGAs, SoCs; experience with AMD/Xilinx platforms preferred. Extensive experience in C and C++, strong OO programming; proficient debugging and troubleshooting. Desirable: C#, Python, LabVIEW. Experience developing software for RTOS and/or embedded Linux. Strong understanding of embedded hardware devices, chip-to-chip interfaces, and networking protocols. Experience working with cross-disciplinary engineering teams to develop and test integrated systems. Experience with laser systems is desired but not required. Prior experience on high-reliability defense/space systems is desired but not required. Ability to obtain/maintain a US Government security clearance if required. Working Conditions
