Civil Litigation Assistant Director City and County of Denver

About the Role Join the City Attorney’s Office as the Civil Litigation Assistant Director, leading a team of approximately five litigators and serving as lead counsel in the City’s most complex civil and civil rights cases. The position is a hybrid work model located in Denver, CO.

Key Responsibilities

Serve as subject matter expert defending civil rights and personal injury lawsuits on behalf of City agencies and employees.

Supervise, mentor, and manage a team of attorneys, overseeing the defense of cases under each attorney’s control.

Try cases to juries in state and federal courts.

Provide day‑to‑day operational management of the Civil Litigation Section, including communication, strategic vision, and other assigned duties.

Manage talent, develop performance standards, resolve conflicts, and hold employees accountable for meeting expectations.

Required Qualifications

Doctor of Jurisprudence (JD) or Bachelor of Laws (LLB). No substitution of experience for education.

Minimum 3 years of experience at the Assistant City Attorney – Senior level with specialized legal experience.

Current license to practice law in Colorado, obtained by the date of hire.

Ability to work in a public service environment, manage complex litigation, and serve as both litigant and manager.

Compensation Salary range: $155,000 – $180,593 per year, based on experience and education.

Location Hybrid model: workplace within Denver, CO; off‑site days must be within the state of Colorado.
