Wood Pole Design Engineer (Electrical Engineering Design Specialist, Assistant) Seattle City Light, a department of the City of Seattle, is one of the nation’s largest municipally owned utilities. This is an exciting opportunity to join the Wood Pole Design Team, responsible for evaluating wood poles, designing replacements, and ensuring compliance with City Light Standards and National Electrical Safety Code (NESC). We are looking for an energetic team member with an interest in learning new things and making a positive impact on our customers.

Responsibilities

Inspect wood poles to evaluate for upcoming work

Engineer wood pole replacements and modifications

Draft and work plan

Prepare work orders and instructions

Specify construction standards & materials

Estimate hours and costs of projects

Support field work, including visiting sites, assessing progress, and responding to inquiries from crews, contractors & customers

Ensure each pole meets City Light and National Electrical Safety Code (NESC) standards

Use IKE4, SpidaCalc/Studio & CADD software

Required Qualifications Associate Degree in Electrical Engineering Technology or two years of college coursework in electrical engineering; plus two years’ experience as an Electrical Engineering Specialist with a major public utility (or equivalent). Additionally, a successful applicant will have experience that reflects a commitment to creating fair and equitable outcomes and will have:

Experience with municipal permits and/or wood poles

Familiarity with overhead distribution design and construction practices

Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, property descriptions, construction schedules, and documents

Familiarity with electric utility standards and National Electrical Safety Code (NESC)

Practical understanding of physical systems typically gained through hands‑on work experience with construction or maintenance

Experience working both outdoors and in an office environment

Effective written and verbal communication skills

Desired Qualifications

Two or more years’ experience working with municipal permits and/or wood poles

Familiarity with overhead distribution design and construction practices

Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, property descriptions, construction schedules and documents

Familiarity with electric utility standards and National Electrical Safety Code (NESC)

Practical understanding of physical systems typically gained through hands‑on work experience with construction or maintenance

Experience working both outdoors and in an office environment

Effective written and verbal communication skills

License, Certification and Other Requirements Current State of Washington driver’s license or evidence of equivalent mobility.

Work Environment / Physical Demands Most work performed in a normal city work/office environment. Field assignments may entail exposure to all types of weather, traffic, hazardous/toxic substances, high voltage energized equipment and work in or near construction sites. May be required to stand, walk, or bend for extended periods. May be required to work nights, evenings, weekends, and/or holidays. Overnight travel may be required.

Additional Information Salary range: $45.95 to $53.56 per hour.
