Position Overview The College of Veterinary Medicine at MU is on a mission to educate and train outstanding clinicians and scientists, generate new knowledge, engage stakeholders, and foster economic growth. The Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program offers nearly two years of hands‑on training in general and specialty clinics. The College also leads training for undergraduate, master’s, and PhD students in Biomedical Sciences and Veterinary Pathobiology.

The Director of the Veterinary Health Center (VHC) is the chief administrative officer responsible for the strategic, operational, and financial leadership of the VHC, a premier academic veterinary medical center. This role advances the mission by ensuring delivery of exceptional clinical services, fostering a dynamic learning environment, and supporting innovative research.

About the Veterinary Health Center Veterinarians across the Midwest refer patients to the VHC for specialized diagnosis and treatment. The center utilizes advanced equipment such as an underwater treadmill, gait analysis monitors, advanced imaging, and groundbreaking equine lameness diagnostics. The VHC provides primary care across species, with services delivered by faculty, house officers, technicians, and students.

The VHC consists of small animal, shelter medicine, equine, and food animal hospitals. Equine and food animal hospitals offer both in‑clinic and ambulatory care.

Annual clinical revenues are approximately $25 million.

Fiscal Year 2025 caseload was 31,592 cases: 80% small animal, 20% large animal.

The VHC hosts 55 board‑certified clinicians across 19 clinical services.

It receives referrals from over 1,200 veterinary clinics.

The Oncology service includes medical, surgical, and radiation oncology, and performs leukapheresis for cancer immunotherapy.

The Radiology Department features PET/CT, digital 3T MRI, equine standing CT, and high‑resolution fluoroscopy.

In FY 2025, the Shelter Medicine program performed 4,131 surgeries for shelter partners.

The VHC includes an on‑site pharmacy and a dedicated social worker for client support.

Diagnostic testing is available through the Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory (VMDL).

Position Responsibilities The Director will oversee all aspects of VHC operations, including hospital administration, financial management, clinical service delivery, client relations, and staff development. The successful candidate will be a visionary leader with strong background in veterinary clinical operations, business administration, and team leadership.

Strategic Planning and Operational Alignment

Develop and implement strategic plans aligned with the college’s mission and goals.

Lead initiatives to improve operational efficiency, patient outcomes, and client satisfaction.

Promote VHC team behaviors that reflect the values of the University of Missouri.

Operations, Compliance, and Communications

Oversee budget, financial planning, revenue cycle management, and financial performance.

Collaborate with finance teams to ensure fiscal accountability.

Communicate effectively with the referral community and the Missouri Veterinary Medical Association.

Address client concerns when they arise.

Maintain compliance with university policies, AVMA best practices, and all state and federal regulations.

Supervise the management team, including the Hospital Administrator, Pharmacy Manager, Radiology Supervisor, Social Worker, and veterinary technician supervisors.

Work with CVM leaders on fiscal, business, human resources, and strategic communications.

Opportunity Identification and Operational Improvement

Identify growth, efficiency, and visibility opportunities across the hospital and the college.

Elevate VHC performance in alignment with the college mission.

Review workflows and resource utilization across all units.

Implement best practices and process improvements to reduce costs and improve service delivery.

Provide strategic oversight of staffing, scheduling, and service coordination.

Support for the Educational Mission

Encourage continuous improvement and professional development at all levels.

Collaborate with the Department Chair of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery to support teaching, research, and service.

Engage with a veterinary specialty through resident training or clinic rotations as desired.

The Director reports directly to the Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine and collaborates closely with the Dean, Department Chair, CVM Business Officer, Assistant Director of Human Resources, and other college and university leaders.

Minimum Qualifications

Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent (VMD, BVSc).

Eligibility for licensure to practice veterinary medicine in Missouri.

Residency training and Diplomate status in a recognized veterinary specialty (ABVS or EBVS).

Advanced education or credentials in business management, practice management, or veterinary operations.

Prior experience in management or leadership in a veterinary teaching hospital, academic medical setting, or large practice.

Background in strategic visioning, planning, and implementation.

Effective collaboration skills and ability to work with other leaders to accomplish goals.

Strong communication skills and ability to engage stakeholders and constituent groups.

Interest in and passion for academic veterinary medicine and its goals of teaching, research, and service.
