King County Department of Information Technology (KCIT) is seeking a Principal AI Manager. The Principal AI Manager will focus on data governance and AI enablement, playing a pivotal role in advancing King County Information Technology (KCIT) towards an AI-first organization. With a concentration on metadata management, data inventorying, and AI governance, this position will enable AI readiness across all IT functions, orchestrate AI-related initiatives, and support the implementation of King County’s AI strategy.

Data Governance Oversee the adoption of strong data governance practices with an emphasis on metadata management and data inventorying.

In coordination with department and executive partners, define, manage, and advance enterprise data management principles, policies and programs for stewardship, advocacy and custodianship of data and analytics, in concert with legal, equity, information security, and risk management.

Lead change management to overcome silos, privacy and security risks and ensure broad participation and value to the business.

Design, test, and establish governance structure with use cases for clear decision-making. Continuously improve the process.

Oversee metadata management and data inventorying to ensure standards for classification, data quality, compliance, interoperability, and management in order to leverage data as an asset.

AI Enablement Lead the enablement of AI capabilities across KCIT, ensuring each function is prepared to adopt and integrate AI responsibly and effectively to deliver business value.

Partner the KCIT Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and Division Directors to operationalize King County’s AI strategy and ensure alignment with enterprise goals.

Promote a culture of responsible AI use, transparency, and continuous learning across the organization, raising technical proficiency throughout.

Manage and maintain the county’s AI registry, ensuring transparency, accountability, and alignment with enterprise risk and information asset management frameworks.

Maintain and prioritize a backlog of AI-related initiatives, coordinating resources and timelines to support delivery.

Assign responsibility and track progress for AI initiatives across KCIT.

Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to integrate AI governance into existing IT processes, including project phases and gates, risk management, and asset tracking.

Serve as an active member of King County AI governance-focused committee(s).

Represent King County in external AI-focused communities, such as the WaTech AI Community of Practice and the GovAI Coalition, to stay informed of best practices and emerging trends.

Qualifications

Demonstrated experience participating in enterprise-wide data governance, technology enablement, or transformation initiatives.

Proven ability to manage cross-functional teams and initiatives in a complex, matrixed environment.

Strong understanding of data and AI governance, risk, and compliance frameworks.

Experience working with public sector organizations or in highly regulated environments.

Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, including the ability to translate complex technical concepts for diverse audiences.

Ability to manage multiple priorities and drive strategic outcomes across organizational boundaries.

Familiarity with metadata management and standards development.

Strong project and program management skills.

Desirable Qualifications

Experience leading data governance, AI governance, technology enablement, or transformation initiatives.

Familiarity with AI risk frameworks, data governance principles, and asset management systems.

Knowledge of public sector procurement, budgeting, and IT governance processes.

Experience with organizational change management and process improvement in the context of technology adoption.

Advanced degree in public administration, information technology, data science, or a related field.

Hybrid Work The work associated with this position will be performed through a combination of onsite work and telecommuting. Employees will have access to shared workspaces at various King County facilities. Employees must reside in Washington state and within a reasonable distance to their King County work site to respond to workplace reporting requirements. King County has a robust collection of tools and resources to support when working remotely.

Work Schedule: The normal work week for this position is Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Alternative work schedules may be considered. This position is FLSA Exempt and is not eligible for overtime pay.
