Safe Horizon
Safe Horizon is seeking an experienced attorney who will report directly to the General Counsel and, with some dotted‑line reporting to the Deputy General Counsel, assist with the overall management of the organization’s general legal affairs. This full‑time position covers a broad range of nonprofit law matters, including contracts, real estate, policy, litigation, regulatory, employment, governance, and tax.
Responsibilities
Advise General Counsel, Deputy General Counsel, senior management and other stakeholders on nonprofit corporate, tax, compliance, intellectual property, governance, benefits, litigation, and employment law issues.
Draft, review, revise, and negotiate a variety of contracts, including agreements with government funders, vendors, consultants, intellectual‑property ownership, corporate sponsorships, special events, licensing, real estate and leases.
Support and engage in Safe Horizon’s antiracism work and the General Counsel’s Office.
Assist General Counsel with ensuring organizational compliance with contracts, regulations and applicable laws, such as lobbying, regulatory and public‑policy matters and charitable‑solicitation laws in New York State and nationally.
Oversee the management of Safe Horizon’s insurance portfolio and advise on risk management, liability and insurance matters.
Monitor legislative developments related to nonprofit organizations, including human‑resources and benefits‑related legislation, and advise senior leadership.
Analyze statutes, regulations and procedures.
Supervise responses to subpoenas and requests for confidential information.
Assist with supervision of interns, volunteers and fellows.
Communicate independently with outside counsel and representatives of funding and regulatory agencies.
Monitor and manage litigation.
Develop and deliver training and workshops for staff.
Represent the corporation in court and administrative hearings.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Demonstrate leadership and interpersonal skills and effectively communicate with people of varying educational levels.
Exhibit excellent organizational and managerial skills, including planning, organization and prioritization.
Qualifications
Admitted to practice law in New York State.
Demonstrated interest in nonprofit or public‑interest work.
Excellent analytical, drafting, negotiation, research and oral and written communication skills.
Ability to provide sound legal advice, develop creative solutions, and exercise sound business judgment.
Track record of professional judgment and discretion in serving multiple teams and senior managers in a diverse and multi‑faceted organization.
Exceptional initiative and proven ability to work efficiently and effectively in a collegial and fast‑paced environment.
Ability and willingness to handle multiple assignments, meet deadlines and pay strong attention to detail.
Flexibility and willingness to work as part of a team as well as independently.
Ability and willingness to perform tasks with creativity and a sense of humor.

At least two years of experience practicing relevant law.
Experience in transaction, litigation, intellectual property or real‑estate law.
Education A law degree from an accredited institution.

Hiring Range $82,000 – $95,000 Annually
