Substation Senior Structural Engineer – HDR
HDR is seeking a qualified Substation Senior Structural Engineer (Substation Sr. SE) to join our growing, nationally ranked Power Delivery team. The Sr. SE will provide leadership in the structural design of high‑voltage switchyards and substation projects up to 500 kV, including steel structure, foundation analysis and design. The role involves coordinating with Project Managers, overseeing design deliverables, mentoring junior staff, and collaborating across disciplines.
Key Responsibilities
Lead, review, and execute structural engineering tasks for substation structural members such as rolled steel shapes, lattice steel framing, and folded plate tubular steel shapes.
Lead, review, and execute foundation design tasks for substation structures (drilled piers, spread footings, driven piles, etc.) using industry‑standard software.
Support substation layout designs, plans, elevations, details, and bills of materials.
Prepare or review construction specifications and material requirements.
Assign project tasks and provide technical guidance to team members.
Perform quality checks and reviews in accordance with HDR’s QMS.
Collaborate with transmission line civil/structural engineers and other teams to share resources and maintain standards.
Mentor and supervise one or more Project Engineers, EITs, or CAD/Designers.
Lead multiple concurrent projects across different locations.
Participate in technical training, seminars, and industry conferences.
Assist with technical papers or presentations showcasing HDR’s capabilities.
May require occasional travel.
Preferred / Desired Qualifications
Master’s degree in Structural Engineering.
Professional SE license or ability to obtain it; license in Hawaii and California is a plus.
10+ years of technical design experience on high‑voltage switchyard and substation projects up to 500 kV.
Experience with NESC, NEC, IEEE, ANSI, ASCE‑113, AISC‑360, ASCE‑7, ACI‑318, and related standards.
Proficiency in design software such as PLS‑Tower, Mathcad Prime, STAAD, RISA, MFAD, L‑Pile, or equivalent.
Prior consulting firm experience.
Strong communication, problem‑solving, and collaboration skills.
Self‑starter who can work independently and as part of a team.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
Minimum 10 years of structural engineering experience with building design.
Professional engineering license (PE, P.Eng) recognized in the location of the position.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, RAM, ETABS, SAFE, or similar analytical software.
Experience in design calculations, layouts, and detailing for steel, concrete, masonry, and wood.
Understanding of gravity and lateral analysis.
Previous experience with an architectural/engineering consulting firm.
