Primary Duties And Responsibilities
Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards and safety standards.
Immediately responds to emergencies to provide necessary assistance to employees and customers.
Conducts designated security patrols throughout the facility as directed, including patrol of the hospital campus/grounds via security motor vehicle or bicycle if required.
Monitors security and appearance of lobbies, waiting areas, elevators, and entrances.
Prepares and submits reports and logs of all incidents, investigations and activities; maintains department records, reports and files as required.
Proficiently utilizes non‑violent crisis intervention and de‑escalation techniques to ensure staff, patients, visitors and others remain safe, calm and respected while onsite.
Provides assistance for way‑finding, parking, deliveries and other requested information for the hospital and MedStar affiliates.
Responds to security and medical code calls, investigates incidents and accidents, gathers information and evidence, notifies appropriate authorities or superiors, and calls for back‑up assistance as necessary.
Testifies at legal proceedings, hearings and trials.
Works cross‑functionally to ensure safe and secure environments.
Conducts foot security patrols of hospital buildings and grounds as required; observes and monitors conditions, objects or persons that might require police action.
Controls access to and inspects packages of those leaving buildings; reports all safety, security and law violations.
Collects and secures patient valuables and lost‑and‑found articles.
Monitors camera surveillance and other security technology systems as directed.
Responds to circumstances where the exercise of law‑enforcement authority may be required.
Interacts with visitors and maintains designated security posts throughout the facility as directed.
Ensures quality outcomes for the security department by communicating with security staff and the public.
Participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts; participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
Minimal Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED required.
Associate's degree preferred.
Experience
1–2 years related security or law‑enforcement experience required, or
1–2 years MedStar service experience in lieu of security experience required.
Licenses and Certifications
Valid State Driver's License (DL) in good standing required.
MD Special Police Commission (MDSPC) preferred.
Special Police Officer – DC (SPO) preferred; if hired, the SPO must satisfy ongoing training requirements to maintain the SPO commission in Maryland and/or DC.
IAHSS certification as a Security Officer preferred.
CPR (Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation) including BLS and NRP for healthcare providers from either the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross within 90 days required.
Additional unit/specialty certifications may vary by department or business unit.
Must successfully complete all MedStar initial training related to violence prevention, de‑escalation and crisis prevention intervention.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Ability to remain calm and thoughtful during a crisis.
Ability to assist in de‑escalating situations with strong emotions and conflict.
