Rutgers University Correctional Health Care is seeking a Part Time UCHC Staff Nurse for the Garden State Youth Correctional Facility, located in Yardville, NJ.
The Staff Nurse utilizes the nursing process to meet a variety of health‑care needs with ambulatory care as a primary focus. Works with a variety of health‑care professionals and security officers in a correctional environment. Frequently functions guided by nursing protocols and functions as a team leader as assigned. Demonstrates competency in assessment and identification of the physical health of adults (18 to 64 years) and geriatrics (65+) across all population groups.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
Provides direct and indirect nursing care to meet physiological, psychosocial, and emotional needs of the inmate‑patient, including adults (18 to 64 years) and geriatrics (65+), and their family within the framework established by the correctional system.
Utilizes effective communication skills by demonstrating respect, concern, and courtesy in all interpersonal relationships.
Uses current knowledge to promote a safe environment for providing health care to inmate‑patients.
Qualifications
Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing.
License to practice in the State of New Jersey.
CPR Certification required.
Valid driver’s license and possession of own vehicle or alternative means of transportation.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor of Nursing (BSN) or its equivalent preferred.
Minimum of one (1) year of experience in a correctional setting preferred.

Physical Demands and Work Environment As a first responder must have the physical capacity to perform CPR for at least 10 minutes. Physically able to lift and carry (upstairs) an emergency treatment bag that can weigh up to 45 pounds and assist in lifting and rotating patients who are unable to ambulate (up to 50 pounds).
Special Conditions Must be approved by the Department of Corrections (DOC) and adhere to all DOC requirements.
Immunization Requirements Under Policy 100.3.1 Immunization Policy for Covered Individuals, if employment will commence during Flu Season, Rutgers University may require certain prospective employees to provide proof that they are vaccinated against seasonal influenza for the current Flu Season, unless the University has granted the individual a medical or religious exemption. Additional infection control and safety policies may apply. Failure to provide proof of vaccination for any required vaccines or obtain a medical or religious exemption will result in rescission of a candidate’s offer of employment or disciplinary action up to and including termination.
