Workforce Data Scientist

Join the Workforce Strategy unit in the Human Capital Bureau and help shape how the City of New York uses data to make smarter workforce decisions.
As a Strategic Workforce Data Scientist you will combine advanced analytics, data visualizations, and storytelling to deliver actionable insights that inform HR initiatives and business planning.
Key Responsibilities
Analyze workforce data (hiring, retention, mobility, engagement, and employee survey data) using Excel, SQL, R, and Python to identify trends, risks, and opportunities.
Build statistical models and predictive analytics to anticipate workforce needs and outcomes.
Ensure data quality, accuracy, and integrity across sources.
Develop interactive dashboards and visualizations that clearly communicate insights to audiences at all levels.
Translate data into stories that resonate with executives, managers, and employees, highlighting both the "what" and the "why".
Create clear, visually compelling presentations tailored to diverse audiences.
Partner with HR, business leaders, and cross‑functional teams to align workforce analytics with organizational priorities.
Provide evidence‑based recommendations that support workforce planning, talent management, and business transformation.
Act as a trusted advisor, building strong relationships with stakeholders across all levels.
Prioritize data requests to meet deadlines and demonstrate strong communication, problem‑solving, and analytical skills.
Minimum Qualifications
Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of full‑time experience related to workforce projects and policies.
Preferred Skills
Intermediate to advanced experience with Microsoft Excel and SQL Server.
Intermediate to advanced experience with data visualization tools such as Power BI, Tableau, or Shiny Apps.
Strong data analysis experience with large, complex data sets and predictive analytics.
Excellent communication skills (listening, written, and oral) and the ability to present to senior/executive‑level managers.
Ability to develop and maintain collaborative working relationships with stakeholders.
Pro‑active, self‑motivated, and service‑oriented approach.
High degree of confidentiality and ability to handle sensitive situations.
Strong desire to work with diverse groups of people and to work well within a team.
