Job Summary
– The Sergeant serves on the Public Safety Department management team, fostering community policing via partnerships with student life, residential life, and other university offices to maintain a safe campus. The Sergeant promotes the mission, values, and goals of the Department and the University as a leader of the Public Safety team.
Key Responsibilities
Protect life and property of the university community.
Enforce compliance with state laws and university regulations.
Maintain familiarity with applicable laws, SOPs, and orders; instruct subordinates, particularly probationary officers.
Patrol the campus; visit assigned officers to ensure efficiency.
Supervise the dispatch center and security booth activities.
Investigate incidents involving on‑duty personnel.
Conduct roll call, inspections, and crime prevention programs.
Assume command during shift operations in absence of a superior officer.
Provide leadership, mentoring, and professional development for assigned officers.
Maintain records, logs, and files; report misconduct and disciplinary issues.
Review and sign subordinates’ reports; respond to emergencies and potential disturbances.
Partner with external agencies to enhance campus safety.
Assist community members in court processes.
Mandatory Position Requirements
Graduate from an MPTC‑approved police academy or obtain a permanent exemption.
Maintain POST certification and Special State Police powers per M.G.L. ch. 22 s. 63.
Eligible for appointment as a Special State Police Officer per M.G.L. ch. 22 s. 63.
Minimum two years police experience for out‑of‑state academy graduates; obtain permanent exemption approved by Massachusetts State Police.
High school diploma or GED equivalent.
Age 21 or older.
Massachusetts Class A License to Carry, Massachusetts Driver’s License.
Pass comprehensive background check, psychological exam, drug test, and pre‑employment medical exam.
Preferred Qualifications
Previous law‑enforcement experience, especially in a college or university setting.
Bachelor’s degree (preferred).
Active CPR/First Aid/AED certification.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
Knowledge of ARMS system.
Military veterans encouraged to apply.
