Job Description
UChicago Medicine is hiring a Respiratory Therapist (RRT) for the Respiratory Care Services department for a Full‑Time, Night shift supporting adult patient populations. We also have student opportunities for those currently enrolled in a Respiratory Therapy program.
In this role, the RRT administers respiratory care treatments, procedures, and protocols under the direct supervision of department leadership and physicians. The RRT conducts patient assessment to determine cardiopulmonary status, implements appropriate patient care protocols, and maintains/improves cardiopulmonary hemodynamic status. The RRT initiates and maintains emergent and non-emergent ventilation per department policies and protocols.
Essential Job Functions
Administers supplemental oxygen/medical gas therapy as prescribed and documents procedures accurately in EPIC.
Administers intermittent or continuous medication delivery therapy (bronchodilators, steroids, mucolytics) and documents in EPIC.
Administers bronchopulmonary hygiene, suctioning, and airway care procedures; implements airway clearance techniques and documents in EPIC.
Initiates and maintains non‑invasive ventilation (BIPAP, CPAP, High Flow Cannula) on an emergent and non‑emergent basis; adjusts settings for patient comfort and documents in EPIC.
Initiates, maintains, and checks status of mechanical ventilation; recommends weaning plans and documents in EPIC.
Provides ventilator management and appropriate hemodynamic monitoring; documents accurately and timely in EPIC.
Performs arterial blood gas analysis and troubleshoots ABG analyzers, reporting results accurately within turnaround guidelines.
Provides patient transport within the facility when patients are moved to other areas on oxygen delivery systems or mechanical ventilators.
Required Qualifications
Graduate of an approved and accredited Respiratory Care Program (at least two years in duration).
Diploma or Certificate of Completion and Associate’s Degree from an accredited academic body.
Demonstrates effective and accurate communication and documentation skills.
Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) by The National Board for Respiratory Care.
Licensed by The State of Illinois as a Respiratory Care Practitioner.
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (American Heart Association).
Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) Certification; PALS Certification; or ACLS Certification preferred, depending on patient care area.
