This Position reports to: R&D Leader - Grid Components
In this role, you will have the opportunity to contribute significantly to successful project results in technology, product, and/or solution development, as well as associated Intellectual Property (IP). Each day, you will act as the first point of contact in Research and Development for specific product‑related issues and maintenance. You will also showcase your expertise by identifying, proposing, and implementing innovative solutions.
The work model for the role is: Hybrid in Mebane, NC
This role is contributing to the Electrification Distribution Solutions division at the North American Technology Center in Mebane, NC.
Accountability
Maintain recognized expertise in a Medium‑Voltage (MV) Reclosers area by integrating the latest developments in technologies, tools, and methodologies into your work.
Work closely with the ABB Factories in MX, DE, CZ, and Mebane, NC finding new ways of solving problems by following your ideas, creating hypotheses, and defining ways to validate them.
Document work results (like findings, designs, or software), allowing others to maintain and improve them.
Understand and initiate IP generation in your area of specialization and participate in the project IP strategy development.
Ensure compliance with IEEE C37.60, IEC 62271‑111, ANSI, and related standards.
Support UL, CSA, and IEC certification efforts, ensuring full compliance with global standards.
Lead root‑cause analysis, design reviews, and reliability engineering to maintain exceptional product quality.
Understand and initiate IP generation in your area of specialization and participate in the project IP strategy development.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering (Electrical or Mechanical preferred).
Minimum 8 years of experience in the electrical power equipment industry required, preferably in the field of MV Reclosers or overhead MV Distribution products.
Proficiency in electrical equipment design in one or more of the following products: Reclosers, Breakers, Outdoor Overhead Distribution products, circuit breakers, contactors, and switches, etc.
Working knowledge of simulation software (Dielectric, thermal, structural) desired.
Knowledge of relevant industry standards (ANSI, IEEE, NEMA, and UL).
Proficiency in MV electrical products design, preferably Medium Voltage products.
Candidates must already have work authorization that would permit them to work for ABB in the US.
