Job Description Summary At PayPal, Senior Software Engineers Backend play a pivotal role in building systems that power millions of global transactions. As a Senior Engineer Backend Java you will architect and develop large‑scale, high-performance backend solutions that directly enhance customer experiences and business outcomes. You’ll lead and mentor engineering teams, champion technical excellence, and drive innovation across the platform.
Essential Responsibilities
Deliver complete solutions spanning all phases of the SDLC (design, implementation, testing, delivery, and operations).
Advise immediate management on project-level issues.
Guide junior engineers.
Operate with little day‑to‑day supervision, making technical decisions based on knowledge of internal conventions and industry best practices.
Apply knowledge of technical best practices in making decisions.
Expected Qualifications
Minimum 5 years of relevant work experience and a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
Additional Qualifications
Proficiency in Java, with extensive experience using Java EE, Spring MVC, or Hibernate.
Proven track record in architecting and developing large-scale backend systems, including RESTful APIs and microservices.
Strong expertise in distributed systems, cloud-native architectures, and containerization technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.
Experience with large-scale data processing, caching strategies, and performance optimization.
Demonstrated ability to lead engineering initiatives, influence design decisions, and mentor teams in a collaborative environment.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working in Agile environments and developing high-performance, large-scale systems.
Familiarity with the payment processing industry and related compliance or regulatory standards.
Hands‑on experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure).
Contributions to open-source projects or active engagement in the developer community.
About the Team The SMB & Financial Services (SMB&FS) Engineering team empowers small and medium-sized businesses to grow through PayPal’s trusted payment and commerce solutions. By helping merchants adopt PayPal products and leverage our suite of Financial Services offerings, we drive business expansion, operational efficiency, and customer success.
Compensation The U.S. national annual pay range for this role is $130,500 to $196,600. Total compensation may include an annual performance bonus, equity, and medical, dental, vision, and other benefits.
