Our Opening and Your Responsibilities Reporting to the Head of Engineering, Hardware, this position will be responsible for leading embedded software development and integration with electronics projects for a series of analytical instruments and devices. Based on various embedded frameworks, software libraries, and specifically tailored development tools, the position will lead all development phases of embedded engineering from architectural design, implementation and testing.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Independently design software/firmware architectures based on an internal model framework and development processes.

Collaborate with R&D team members to design, develop, and test electronic, electro‑mechanical, and optoelectronic components, subsystems (including systems on chip/module), and systems for integration into new scientific and legacy products.

Provide software interfaces to connect device drivers, PC software, and peripherals to instruments. Integrate software libraries and drivers provided by external partners and team members. Collaborate with the R&D team to set the firmware/API requirements for the external partners.

Generate embedded software code and conduct internal design reviews for performance, testability, manufacturability, and serviceability.

Collaborate with hardware and software engineers and scientists to enable prototyping and development of software interfaces in parallel with hardware design and verification.

What You Need to Succeed

Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer science, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Seven (7) years of software development experience as an embedded software architect and system‑level firmware designer and developer.

Detailed knowledge of microprocessors and embedded computing systems and associated subsystems, as well as software development lifecycle process and various SDLC models.

Excellent C, C++; experience with the GNU tool chain and/or MS Visual Studio/VS Code; experience with off‑target embedded development using cross‑compiling tool chains, MATLAB, or C# is a plus.

Extensive knowledge of Windows and Linux operating systems, various software configuration management tools, and best practices related to SCM disciplines. Driver development experience is a plus.

Experience designing, developing, testing, and deploying service applications that expose APIs enabling client interactions; especially request/response (REQ/RSP) and publish/subscribe (PUB/SUB) models.

Microcontroller experience and experience with highly constrained computing platforms is required. Microchip MPLABX‑IDE and/or other embedded platform development tool chains are a plus.

Experience with embedded operating systems and knowledge of embedded operating system operational modes. Embedded Linux, FreeRTOS, VxWorks, or other real‑time operating systems and development experience are a plus.

Hands‑on experience with electronics, including testing, validating, and troubleshooting assembled circuit boards using digital voltmeter, oscilloscope, and other hardware/software analysis tools.
